11/22/2012 Sleep in on Black Friday, come out
and support Small Business Saturday
Many people will be getting this edition of the Press a little earlier this week. The reason for that is our printer was over booked this week. That meant with a short week because of Thanksgiving, we had to have the paper done on Friday.
Not the easiest of tasks considering we gather the majority of our news over the weekends. With Christmas and New Years landing on Tuesdays this year, we will have to do this a few more times.
+ + + + + + Congratulations to Sam Thomsen and Thomi Lee for earning trips to state diving and swimming. Thomi won first place in the 500 freestyle, wow that is a fantastic accomplishment. We have consistently put out great divers and swimmers at Chisago Lakes, and this year's crop were some of the best. Congratulations to Thomi for such a successful season.
+ + + + + + Speaking of Thanksgiving, if you are going to be alone this Thanksgiving, I have a solution for you. Area churches have joined forces for this year’s annual Community Thanksgiving meal. The meal is a free will offering and is a wonderful setting to enjoy a great meal with companionship. To make a reservation, you are asked to call 651-257-6300. For those of you who are lucky enough to spend the day with friends and family, I hope you cherish your time together. There is nothing greater than spending time with loved ones during the holidays.
+ + + + + + This Friday is “Black Friday”. Many of you will venture out into the darkness seeking to save some money of a flat screen television or the latest Iphone. I have never been one to spend a night in the cold just for the chance to buy a cheap knock-off brand television. I have spent the night in the cold to get tickets for a Motley Crue concert, but I look at that as more of a growing experience (although my mother would have told you it was a hair growing experience) than a shopping experience. Both insane in my opinion.
+ + + + + + On Saturday, there is an event taking place that we hope will replace black Friday in its entirety. I am speaking about Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is about Main Street, not Wall Street. It’s about entrepreneurs and families selling things that the chains and e-commerce companies aren’t. Only small businesses can offer truly unique gifts and the most genuinely friendly customer service. Small Business Saturday is also about supporting the local economy. The chain stores are owned by bigger companies that are probably based somewhere other than your hometown, but small businesses are usually owned by your neighbors. When you shop at a small business, you’re supporting your local economy and your local job base. Let’s make a concerted effort to shop locally on Saturday and the rest of the holiday season. If you do happen to venture out on black Friday, you have my condolences.
+ + + + + + The annual Dash and Dine 5K run/walk is this Thursday. The race takes place near the Chisago Lakes Sportsmans Club and begins at 9 a.m. Come early to register. It is a great way to burn extra calories before ingesting even more. For more information, you can visit www.shippdental.com
+ + + + + + Beginning next week, the Chisago Lakes area will be celebrating the Christmas holiday together. I am referring to the Chisago Lakes Small Town Christmas event. Just about all of our great local businesses have joined forces to help you this Christmas season. You and your family are invited to walk the streets of Chisago City, Shafer, Taylors Falls, Lindstrom and Center City this weekend. Stop in any of the stores and chances are they will have some great specials on Christmas gifts for some or your whole family. Many will be offering free coffee and cookies, so bring the whole family! Look for listings in this edition for a list of participating businesses.
+ + + + + + Remember to send your child’s coloring contest entries or drop them off here at the Press. If you child’s picture is chosen, he or she will win a special prize and be featured in the Christmas edition of the County Press.
+ + + + + + If you think advertising on Craigslist is all the rage and that is all anybody ever looks at, think again. I posted three vehicles recently on Craigslist. all three vehicles had good prices, photos, basically everything you need for Craigslist. They sat there for two weeks with a total number of calls equalling zero. I put the vehicles in the Press and Search...six calls the first week. This paper really works folks.
