rivalry that once was is back in full force
If you and your wife or girlfriend or friend are looking for a nice night out on Valentine's Day, there are plenty of options here locally for you to have a great time. If you are looking for a romantic meal, look no farther than the Press or last weekend's Search Shopper. There were tons of Valentine's specials at various eating establishments in our area. All of them are offering something special at a great price. If you didn’t get the Search last week, just go to our website www.chisagocountypress. com and click on the Search Shopper at the bottom of the screen. There you will see a digital version of the Search where you can even print coupons. I hope you have a wonderful time this Valentines.
We are nearing the 2013 Home and Garden Show at the Chisago Lakes Highschool. If you are a business owner and had every intention of being in the show, but life got in the way, there is still time. You can still register by calling the Chamber at 651 257 1177. I know there are a few spots left.
The Rotary has a really fun event coming soon. They will be hosting a Roaring 20's Casino Night on February 16. The event will take place at Strom Hall in Ojiketa Regional Park which will add to the atmosphere and theme of the “Roaring 20’s.” The public is invited to dress in 20’s apparel and come enjoy a night of social entertainment with gambling and a silent auction. There will be a raffle with great prizes as well. There is going to be music and dancing as well as Eichten’s Bistro providing hors d’ oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets may be purchased by calling 651-402-5429 or from a Rotary member.
I had the opportunity to attend the Chisago Lakes vs North Branch girls and boys varsity games on Friday. The schools always play double headers, that way it gives everyone a great chance to see a team they would probably not see otherwise. The girls played the first game, and what seemed like an evenly matched game, soon got out of hand with the Wildcats walking away with an easy victory. The boys played in the later game, and if you attended the first game at Chisago, you would know there is no love lost between the two teams. The second game began where the previous game ended, bodies flying everywhere and plenty of pushing and shoving. A few times the refs had to warn the players to cool it. North Branch mounted a big time come back in the second half, and once again both teams got a little chippy. I know what you are saying, "Why can't the kids just play the game without getting into it with the other team?" To that I say, I love it. I love the fact that there is no love lost between the two schools. I love the thought of a rivalry, especially this close in proximity. Shoot, when I was in high school, the gym would be packed when we played North Branch and so would theirs when we traveled up there. If we had no rivalries highschool sports would be well, boring. North Branch has some really great players and Chisago has some very exciting players as well. How refreshing to see two evenly matched teams go at it as hard as they can.
Our prayers go out to the Brink family. Last week, they lost a very special person, Christie. Christie passed away after a long fight with a horrible disease. Please keep the Brinks in your thoughts as they work through a devastating time in their lives.
We also would like to pass along our condolances to the family of Byron Olson. Byron recently retired from Wyoming Township and then Wyoming agter serving 35 years as the road superintendent. Byron was a great guy with a great sense of humor. Byron will be missed by all.
The Center Ice Club would like to invite you to their dance this Saturday evening. The club has raised money for both the boys and girls hockey programs over the years. The club is raising funds to fund a weight room in the arena. The dance is this Saturday at the Chisago City Community Center. Doors open at 8 p.m. There will be music, beer, food, wine and set-ups. Call 651-398-4762 for tickets or purchase at the door.
