1/9/2014 2:24:00 PM Big changes in local events, celebrations announced
There are two big changes to announce as both the Celebration of Lakes and Wannigan Days re-invent themselves. The Celebration of Lakes is totally revamped and is taking place January 24, 25 and 26 in and around Lindstrom, instead of its traditional location on North Center Lake in Center City.
Some of the ice-related favorite activities will continue, anchored by a national fishing competition on Chisago Lake. The ice fishing will be part of the North American Ice Fishing Circuit calendar and weigh-in is Sunday, January 26 at 2 p.m. at Frankie’s in Chisago City. The fishing is on Chisago Lake. Coinciding with the ice fishing tournament are free seminars, all held at the Lindstrom Community Center. ~ Basic ice fishing information will be the topic Friday night 5 to 7 p.m.
~ If you are a more advanced ice fisherman and want more details about the NAFIS and its tournament schedule, this presentation is at 7 p.m.
~ The Cabela Kids’ Fish Camp is Saturday, Jan 25 also at Lindstrom Community Center. Kids will get basic instruction and learn about ice fishing equipment starting at 10 a.m. until the kids’ tournament; which will be on Lindstrom Lake at noon. The hot air balloons of prior Celebrations are a thing of the past. There were so few times the weather cooperated and the ballons could fly, that the chamber of commerce members who put the celebration together opted to move the celebration in a different direction.
Along with the ice fishing tourney there’s also skating off Lindstrom beach and the “smoosh” race is scheduled for Saturday at noon. To register your smoosh team see the Chisago Lakes Area chamber of commerce website. The team members need to be age 15 and older. Wannigan Days news The main Wannigan Days news is in the dates for the events. The 56th celebration in Taylors Falls and St. Croix Falls will be Thursday June 12 to Sunday, June 15 2014.
The new dates were selected so Wannigan Days doesn’t compete with other happenings such as Polk County Fair and Chisago County Fair and other regional festivals. Wannigan Days St. Croix Falls Coordinator Woody McBride said the July calendar for the river valley was “overbooked.” Moving Wannigan Days to earlier in the summer allows the townspeople and small businessowners a little more opportunity to personally enjoy the celebration, before tourism season hits full speed. McBride is open to proposals from family-friendly event providers who may want to be involved in Wannigan Days. Expanding the “family fun zone” by Festival Theatre is being considered, a talent show and maybe a battle of the bands are possible, a farmers’ market and more are on the drawing board.
This is a community-funded celebration co-sponsored by St Croix Falls and Taylors Falls and the area chamber of commerce is also a partner. A “wannigan” is a houseboat that used to travel the St. Croix River and provide food and services for the logging crews that worked the region. Questions or inquiries about getting involved in this summer’s line-up can be directed to Woody McBride at email@example.com or call 612-385-4598. Taylors Falls contact information is through city hall at firstname.lastname@example.org or 465-5133.
