3/2/2017 4:13:00 PM Home Show this weekend, a fun relaxed atmosphere, referendum
This weekend you and your family are invited to the Chisago Lakes High School. The high school is where you will find the 2017 Home, Business and Garden Expo or as us old duffers call it, the Home Show.
The show has been around for decades since back in the 80’s when local businessman Don Bluhm had an idea to showcase local businesses. The show has blossomed into a two day event that is filled with local businesses all offering you something for your home, business or garden. Heck, even the Chisago County Press is at the show. The show is packed with great entertainment and seminars for your enjoyment.
I say this all the time, but the atmosphere is one of the reasons I keep coming back to the show. It’s a chance to connect with neighbors and some friendly faces that I haven’t seen in a while. The one thing about this area that I will say, is that we have some of the most down to earth business owners and employees that you will ever come across. If you like high pressure sales people, this is not the place for you. I think speaking with other businesses in the show, this is the reason they have so much success at the Home Show. People enjoy casually speaking about plans they have for their homes without being bombarded with someone trying to close a sale. Have I made it clear enough that this is a low-key atmosphere? If so, then I would urge you and your family to venture out this weekend to the home show. We will definitely see you there.
As you may or may not know, there is a Chisago Lakes School District bond referendum coming up fairly soon. The vote will be held on May 9. The bond, if approved would authorize the issuance of $64.9 million in school building bonds. Before you call 911 because you are choking on your tater tot hotdish, the school does have another bond that is sunsetting or coming off the books. You are encouraged to go to the Chisago Lakes School District webpage and click on the property tax site link. Once there, you will be allowed to input your home value and it will show you the increase on your taxes.
You are very much invited to attend one of three community information sessions. The first one will take place at the Taylors Falls Elementary cafeteria on March 21 at 6:30 pm. The second will be at the PAC in the high school on March 28 at 6:30 pm. The third and final session will be April 4 at Lakeside Elementary’s gymnasium. More could be added in the future.
You are encouraged to come and ask questions if you have them. This is a big deal, but once you see all of the plans the school has for the bond money, you may feel differently.
Today, I saw a father taking his two young boys out on the lake for some ice fishing. Maybe the ice is safe, maybe it isn’t, I have no idea. But please don’t subject your children to your ‘bravery.’ We would love to have them in our community for years to come.
