Wind, wind go away, DON'T come back another day! Get up, get out and volunteer

Could you believe how windy it was last week?  It wasn’t just a gust here and there, it was sustained house shaking wind.  I was really surprised we didn’t have more power outages with the wind storm.

There were some trees down including my neighbor’s really big pine tree.  The buffalo statue at Eichtens Cheese and Bistro decided he had enough and laid down out of the wind.  My garage lost about half of its shingles on one side.  It was crazy.

I remember visiting some friends a few times when I was younger who lived in Moorhead out along the North Dakota Border.  Many times I commented about the non-stop wind to them.  Just like someone who lives next to the airport in the twin cities, they just shrugged it off and said they don’t notice it.  How can you ignore a flying shingle coming right for your head? I’m so glad it’s over.

As I walked around the Home Show a week ago, I stopped to speak with some great non-profit groups from our area.  In my mind, I thought how incredibly positive all of these people seemed.  As the third person asked if I would like to volunteer, I decided to say yes.  Then it clicked with me, maybe the reason these people are so happy and positive is because they volunteer.

I do belong to a volunteer group called A Brush with Kindness and I am not lying to you, it has changed my life.  Not so much the work itself, but being around others with such big hearts. They have learned the secret in life is putting others in front of yourself.  These people know there is a greater calling than working 40 hours a week and watching TV another 20 hours.

Folks, we have so many great non-profit groups in our area that would welcome a volunteer like yourself with open arms.  There are opportunities for people of all ages, shapes and sizes.  There is only one thing holding you back.  You.

Believe me, I was the same way, but once you make the decision to volunteer, you will never look back.  You don’t have to commit to 50 hours a week of service, there are opportunities for all the time you want to give. Whether it’s an hour a week, an hour a month or 20 hours.  There is a great organization that would welcome you no matter how much you can give.  Just make the decision to get up, get out and help. You will be so glad you did.

The Chisago Lakes Chamber of Commerce has a great starter list on their website.

The County Press is again putting together our annual Community and Visitor Guide.

The guide began about 14 years ago and has blossomed from a 34 page magazine to a 90 page robust read that is packed with wonderful local information along with tons of information about great businesses in our area.  It is the best buy for your money when it comes to advertising because your business ad will last a year. The guides are circulated throughout the year and you will find them at restaurants, doctor office, dentist offices and waiting rooms all over the Chisago Lakes area.  On top of that, they are huge with local realtors for distribution to people from outside the area looking to move here.

Don’t miss your chance to be in the guide, give us a call at 651-257-5115 or email us at chisago@citlink.net. We will help you design a creative, attractive ad that will bring more people through your door.
