When broadcasting live turns ugly; grab your dancing shoes and head to Lindstrom

If you have yet to see or read about the story of the man who was mad at his girlfriend  so he decided to kill another man to get back at her, you must live under a rock.  To compound the matter, this killer decides to kill an innocent elderly man and then post it on Facebook.  It seems like everyday, something happens in the world that involves social media that leaves me shaking my head.

I am going to show my age on this, but do you remember a terrible Arnold Schwarzenegger movie  “Running Man”?  I know, I know, all of his movies are terrible. The movie is set way into the future (2019), and features a live broadcast television show where contestants would battle to the death on live television.  I remember thinking way back then (1997), that this will never, ever take place. Now in 2017 (pretty close to 2019), I am not so sure it won’t be on TV in the next year.

How numb have we become as a society-- that events on social media such as murders, have become commonplace for us?  How much more “freedom” are we going to have to endure before we are actually watching people die on game shows?  After reading what I just wrote, I really sound old, and maybe I am. But if we continue down this path who knows what is next. “All of those words Matt, what’s your solution?”  I have no idea. Honestly. Sometimes I feel like a caveman. The president of Facebook said they need to work harder at keeping something like this from happening.  Man, I miss 1986. No cell phones, no social media, no social riots, just a simple cave man life.

If your daughter is attending prom this year, I would recommend that you check Recycled Wardrobes.  Both the North Branch and the Lindstrom store locations are holding the annual Prom Dress Event.  This is your chance to save mega bucks on a prom dress. They have tons of very gently used prom dresses for a fraction of the cost new.  There is no reason to break the bank on prom, Recycled Wardrobes can help.

Hopefully the next time you read my column, I will be writing about Chisago Lakes winning the America’s Best Community competition.  The announcement is Wednesday (yesterday) and out of eight cities and areas three will be chosen to split a purse of six million dollars total.  As I stated before, no matter what the outcome, our community has changed. There is now a universal vision for the future of Chisago Lakes, if we win, great, if we don’t, we know where we are heading.
Saturday, you are invited to the Lindstrom Community Center/City Hall. Lindstrom is hosting the first annual Spring Swing dance.  It is your chance to learn how to swing dance with friends and neighbors.  Admission is free and there will be food and beer available for purchase.

Doors open at 4:30 with instruction from 5-6 pm and dancing beginning at 6 with music by Retro Swing Sister.  See you there!
