Chisago County Relay for Life, happening July 14
The Chisago County Relay for Life event is in the midst of some changes. The event has been moved, to North Branch Outlet Mall, on the west side of I-35 in North Branch. The Relay for Life is July 14. Start time is 4 p.m.
New event Chairperson JoAnn Belau said the mall is more centrally-located within the county and the paved surface in the mall lot will make it easier for those with walkers and wheelchairs to participate. The former site at the Almelund Threshing Show grounds also cost money to reserve and she said, “When you are trying to raise money for a cause like this, any donations you get are vital.”
The goal for this year’s event is $25,000.
Donations for the lighted bags that rim the relay walking circle can be made at http://www.relayforlife.org/ chisagoMN. Or, you are welcome to visit and enjoy the event and make a donation on-site.
Belau also said the committee this year is focusing on “back to the basics.” The past relays had grown to include vendors and special events like a dance, and the committee wants to get back to the relay format, with laps and enjoying the fellowship. The effort is meant to build local support for cancer services for survivors and those who are fighting, as well as those who have lost the battle.
The relay “track” is lined with purchased, lighted bags or luminaria that can be personally decorated in honor of a loved one or the relay team will decorate the luminary for you. The North Branch mall location was an original site for the county’s Relay for Life organization. At one time. there were two relays held, one at the mall and one at the Chisago Lakes High School track and field facility.
Anybody who wants to become involved in the committee should mark their calendars for planning meetings that have been announced. Belau said the committee gets together at North Branch Trinity Lutheran Church (by Cty Road 14 and Grand Ave.)
Meetings are tonight Thursday, May 3, Monday May 21, Thursday June 7, Thursday June 28 and Monday July 9. All the meetings are at 7 p.m. and they gather at the fireside room in Trinity.
