Trail, highway design millions hang on Governor signing
A segment of the Swedish Immigrant Trail and Highway 8 design phase are hinging on the huge funding bills that, as of press deadline, were sitting on the Governor’s desk in St. Paul.
The bike trail made it through the prioritizing process by the Legislative Commission on Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund and is earmarked for $2,254,000. The funds if approved will be available until June 30,2021.
The highway request is about $3 million. Area officials lobbied strongly for the highway funding to get the highway designing process underway at the local level-- prepping the highway improvements to be ready for federal and state funding streams.
County Administrator Bruce Messelt said the county certainly hopes the two are approved by the Governor, who has two weeks to act from Monday this week.
The county would then sit down with MnDOT and plan how to move forward on finalizing concept design and start community dialogue. The highway appearance is not decided yet, it could be a parkway design, two lanes with passing lanes or a host of other layouts. It will be an upgrade from a two-lane rural highway, that much is certain.
