Watershed Dist. managers let lakes tell their own story in sedimentation research
When the managers for the Comfort Lake-Forest Lake Watershed District make decisions on which projects will get support and where district efforts will be effective in meeting goals for improving water quality-- they’ll first consider the science and then everything else.  District managers respond to citizen input, certainly, but long range goals and individual projects,  are founded on facts.

Last week the district managers were presented a fascinating study done by the St Croix Watershed Research Station analyzing core samples taken from the bottom of Moody, Shields and Comfort Lakes.  Moody is at the “top” of the watershed drainage, Shields is in the middle and Comfort has an outfall to a tributary to the Sunrise River.

Sign gets new life in North Branch
The vintage soda advertisement that has overlooked the North Branch business district for decades got a facelift as part of a project through the city’s Beautification Committee.  Artist Tony Stafki,  www.WallArtByTony.com was chosen to do the honors. He tells the Press he’s been doing this for about 10 years.  He specializes in mural art, restoration of public artworks and faux finishes in residential and business applications  Stafki added, “I am very thankful I was selected by the North Branch Beautification Association to restore this North Branch heirloom.  Without their drive and vision this project would not have happened. To be able to add my name to the list of talented artists who have kept this mural alive for so many years is very humbling.”

Chisago Lakes football finds magic in mixing quarterbacks vs St. Francis
Even though it was a beautiful fall evening, homecoming was a bit of a downer for the students and fans at St. Francis High School last Friday night.
Wildcat quarterback Henry Trost rushed for 229 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Wildcat football team to a 49-19 thrashing of the St. Francis Fighting Saints.  The Wildcats led 21-0 after the first quarter and 35-0 at the half and never really let the Fighting Saints back into it.  Wildcat head coach Bill Weiss said, “We played up to our potential in all three phases of the game – offense, defense and special teams.  We played well together and were able to do some good things.”

Center City Council supportive of culvert water filtration project; fire hall addition bids should be awarded Oct. 25
The Center City Council last week signed-off on a replacement for a deteriorating  under-road culvert between Pioneer and North Center Lakes. The failing culvert was affecting the integrity of Main Street north of the government center.
The flow is out of Pioneer Lake into North Center Lake.  The relatively low water quality of Pioneer Lake and its impact on North Center has also been figured into this project.  The  bid includes a filtration apparatus with a changeable media component, serving to trap both particulate and dissolved phosphorus.  The idea has been used successfully in parking lot stormwater management applications, council was told, but this installation is more uncommon.

Another fall favorite: Pears
It is still apple season but it is also pear season. We were at one of our sons’ home recently and knew he had a young pear tree that had pears ready to pick….all three of them! He wanted to give them one more day to ripen a bit more and when he checked them out the next day they were gone.  I’m sure you know who the culprit was…. A deer! Don’t ask me what he thought about that! Did he have them fenced? Yes, but the fence wasn’t quite high enough to keep the deer from stretching its neck over the fence for a tasty treat. End of story.

Opportunity to say thank you to emergency responders means everything to Lindstrom man

Lindstrom resident John Schmidt was clearly overcome by emotion, when he did the honors last week of presenting LifeSaving Medals to two Lakes Area Police personnel and two Lakes Region EMS crew members during the police commission meeting.  Schmidt recounted snippets of a near-death incident, exactly one year ago, with the authoritative but humorous demeanor many will recognize from Schmidt’s days as M.C. of the Celebration of Lakes hot air balloon activities.

North Branch Fall Harvest Festival; the rumor mill is churning along
Thanks to the wonderful people who worked so hard to make sure Shafer Days and Apple Fest were such great events. The weather was a bit overcast on Shafer Days but that didn’t deter anyone from having a great time.  Sunday, the sun came out for a beautiful day to hold Apple Fest. Once again the crowds were immense and the food was great.  what a great community we have here. Think about it, in most communities you would have one celebration to enjoy, here we have over ten we get to enjoy all year round.
