It is rhubarb season again
Do you remember the song “June is bustin’  out all over?” Well, if you’re among the older generation you will remember it but as of right now,  it’s “rhubarb is bust-in out all over”. In days gone by rhubarb was often thought of as a vegetable but a I think of it as a fruit. Rhubarb is one fruit that likes cold weather. It is referred to as an immigrant of the colder parts of Asia, probably Siberia. Skip Siberia…I can  pick it right  now when it’s not so cold, here in Lindstrom! Needless to say, it’s about rhubarb today and probably next week as well, as I have lots of good recipes to share with you….starting with...

TF Council tackles ongoing chores; approves liquor license for new owner of bar in town
The city of Taylors Falls will have completed lining all of its sewer pipes by next year. The city council approved a contract for this season’s pro-active lining to Visu-Sewer, of Blaine,  on a quote of about $44,000.  The city has been doing about 1,500 feet annually in an effort to get all the sewer routes lined-- which Mayor Mike Buchite pointed out actually saves money long term in helping avoid costly repairs.

Referendum passes, will be wonderful for the community; Mother's Day here
Well it looks like the Chisago Lakes School referendum has officially passed.  According to the numbers we were given, there were over 3,000 people that took part in the vote. That number is absolutely amazing to me. As a community we should be very proud that over 3,000 take that much ownership in our community. While the vote may or may not have went the way you voted, the bottom line is it passed and I truly believe that this will help the community.  A community center could be exactly what Chisago Lakes needs.  Either way, if you took part in the vote thank you. I would be writing this if the referendum lost as well.

Jazz up your hamburgers
Good morning….or afternoon. One day last week while listening to the radio, after I read the “Press”, the talk was about hamburgers as this is hamburger month. Is it possible they read last weeks’ column saying the same thing? One never knows but I doubt it!  It is burger recipes today, specifically cooking them on the grill.

North Branch Council hears balance is strong, audit good
The North Branch City Council, minus member Kathy Blomquist,  received the city financial audit last week for 2016.

Council heard the city had about a 70 percent fund balance at year end (100 percent would mean it had cash on hand for a whole fiscal year) which is necessary for cash flow from year to year.  County-collected taxes are only distributed twice-yearly.

The 70 percent is “strong” said accounting firm presenter Doug Host.

He also told council North Branch has been buying down long term debt at a rate of about $2 million annually and has been able to erase about $10 million. The “concerted effort” to address the debt is a good thing, he said.  Host advised  the council to keep an eye on the debt service dedicated line item so it stays a priority.
