Chisago Lakes Boys Tory Copeland scored twice in the first half to give the fourth-seeded Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the Section 7A semifinal game at top-seeded Duluth Marshall. Marshall came roaring back with three goals before halftime to take a 3-2 lead and then added an insurance goal in the second half to beat the Wildcats 4-2 this past Tuesday, October 16. The loss ended the season for the Wildcats (7-10-2). The Wildcats made it to the semifinals with victories at home in the first two rounds of the playoffs. They beat 13th-seeded Two Harbors 3-1 last Thursday, October 11 and then squeaked by fifth-seeded Proctor 1-0 in the quarterfinals on Saturday, October 13. Chisago Lakes Girls In their two playoff games this year, the young Wildcats (with only two seniors on the roster) showed the rest of Section 7A that they are back on track and will be a force to be reckoned with in 2013. The Wildcats, seeded tenth in Section 7A, upset seventh-seeded Proctor 3-0 on Thursday, October 11 at Proctor in the opening round of the playoffs. In the quarterfinals, second-seeded Hermantown needed over time to beat the Wildcats 2-1. The game was played at Hermantown last Saturday, October 13. The loss ended the season for the Wildcats (5-11-2). North Branch Boys The senior-laden North Branch boys, who struggled to win all season, came alive in the playoffs and made things interesting. The tenth-seeded Vikings upset seventh-seeded Hibbing Chisholm 2-1 in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs last Thursday, October 11. And they gave second-seeded Duluth Denfeld a scare in the quarterfinals, but fell just short. The Vikings lost 2-1 to Denfeld last Saturday, October 13 at Duluth. The loss ended the Vikings’ (3-13-1) season. North Branch Girls Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the sixth-seeded Vikings came roaring back with four goals in the second half to beat Zimmerman 4-1 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Section 7A playoffs. The Vikings controlled the game throughout, but didn’t break through until senior Jamie Salo put one in the back of the net early in the second half. Senior Bayley Ertl scored the go-ahead goal and freshman Emma Pignato added two more to seal the win for the Vikings. The game was played at North Branch last Thursday, October 13. The win sent them up to Esko to face third-seeded Esko/Carlton on Saturday, October 13. The Vikings lost 2-1 to Esko/Carlton. The loss ended the Vikings’ (8-7-2) season.
