Tom Keating Memorial Wrestling Tournament Second-seeded Sam Peltier (160) and unseeded Levi Eastwood (182) won individual championships at the third annual Tom Keating Memorial Wrestling Tournament last Saturday, January 5 at Foley. Eight of the 12 Viking wrestlers placed at the tournament, enabling the Vikings to take fifth place as a team in the 16-team tournament. Peltier pinned three of his four opponents on his way to his first place finish. He dispatched Tristan Emery of Sauk Rapids-Rice in just 45 seconds in their opening round match. It took Peltier a little longer, 1:16, to finish off Jake Nienaber of Alexandria. In a close, hard fought match, Peltier beat Tyler Beehler of Foley 2-1. Beehler was nearly disqualified in the match after accumulating 3:30 of injury time. And in the championship match, Peltier pinned Kyle Kolstad of Holdingford 33 seconds into the second period to claim the trophy. Eastwood decisioned Justin Goeman of Chanhassen/Chaska 5-1 in their opening match. He major decisioned Dylan Vait of Sauk Rapids-Rice 14-2 to advance to the championship match. The unseeded Eastwood beat top-seeded Jordan Nelson of team champions Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 5-2 to win the Vikings’ second individual championship of the day. Other highlights for the Vikings included two third place finishes.
Reid Johnson (126) squeaked by Derek Dengerud of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City to take third. After winning his first match, Zack Sundly (195) lost his first match of the year to eventual tournament champion Tyler Midas of Foley 3-2. In the third place match, Sundly decisioned top-seeded Mitch Messman of Holdingford 6-1 to finish in third place. Sundly is ranked ninth at 195 in Class AA and Messman is ranked third in Class A. The Vikings had two fourth place finishers in Aaron Senne (132) and Jake Pilz (138). Tristan LaBelle (170), in his first action back from a knee injury, lost his first match, won his second by injury forfeit and then got beat in his third match. And Cameron Sampson got beat his first match but wrestled back to take seventh place in the tournament, including a win over Matt Kruger, a blind wrestler from Sauk Rapids-Rice. Seamus Hunter (285) also lost his first match, but came back to pin his next two opponents and finished fifth. Eric Bergstrom (220) was not able to compete in the tourney due to a knee injury. Tonight, the Vikings will welcome conference foe Irondale to North Branch High School for a dual meet starting at 7 p.m. This Saturday, January 12 the Vikings will head down to Mounds View High School to participate in the Mounds View Invitational.
