'Cats fare well vs Class AAA teams
BY CHUCK FITZER

Wildcat wrestler Kyle Schoenecker won all three of his matches to take first place at 113 pounds at the Eastview Invitational last Saturday, January 19 at Eastview. Being mindful of match count limits, the Wildcats sent just ten wrestlers to the tournament and finished seventh out of the twelve participating teams. “Kyle wrestled really well this weekend,” said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. “It was his first time down to 113 this season. He looks a little bigger down there. He really wrestled a couple of smart matches that got him the championship.”

The tournament provided some tough competition for the AA Wildcats. Ten of the teams in the tournament were Class AAA. The only other AA team was Scott West, who is perennially one of the best AA teams in the state. Frederixon said, “Our guys needed a tournament that let them know where they stood, and the tough competition at this one was good for us to see.”

The Wildcats had five placewinners overall, and Frederixon talked a little about each one’s performance. He said, “Dylan Connell, at 120, ran into some pretty stiff competition. He needed that and did a good job battling his way back for third place. Joe Virga, at 160, beat a good Coon Rapids kid to the finals and lost by decision to Jacob Rukavina of Eastview, ranked sixth in Class AAA, in the finals. Eric Brown faced some stiff competition and finished sixth at 170. Jonah Westbury got second at 285, losing 5-3 in the championship match, and I think he’d like to have that one back.”

Tomorrow, the Wildcats will host the Wildcat Invitational at Chisago Lakes High School starting at 4 p.m. Other participating teams include Big Lake, Mahtomedi, Spring Lake Park, St. Paul Johnson, Orono, Hutchinson and NRHEG.
