Quick hits: LARA saves middle school soccer, new coaches

With previous years’ budget cuts catching up to the Chisago Lakes Middle School ranks, the 2013-14 season was going to be the first without middle school soccer.

But, when Lakes Area Recreational Association confirmed that boys and girls soccer would be eliminated for this fall, they made a one-time donation to provide the funding necessary to reinstate the middle school soccer programs. The lack of soccer programs in MS would’ve left between 40-50 middle school students without a fall sport. Parents recently received a letter informing them that middle school soccer will be around for the 2013-14 season.

Chisago Lakes volleyball Head Coach Ashley Jamros moved on to a teaching position in the Centennial School District, and was no longer able to coach the Wildcats. Chisago Lakes Primary School teacher Amber Klaphake has been named as Jamros’s replacement. Klaphake has assistant coaching experience at Big Lake High School, and she coached the 17U and 16U teams in the White Bear Lake Juniors program.

The Minnesota State High School League announced earlier this month that Chisago Lakes will be hosting state quarterfinal games for this fall’s football and soccer state tournaments. The dates and times are still to be determined, but look for some top teams to be making their way to the area for the chance to play further in the state tourney. Chisago Lakes has previously held neutral site section games in both sports. “We are excited to showcase our fantastic stadium to people by hosting state games this fall,” said CLHS Activities Director Neil Fletcher “Our stadium and staff are second to none. To be able to host these two events is unusual for state high schools. It is a great opportunity!”

Chisago Lakes isn’t the only school with a new volleyball coach. North Branch is bringing on Mike Selbitschka to coach. He is taking over for the departing Hayley Lang, who had coached the Vikings for the past three seasons.

In other coaching news, Anna Pouliot is no longer coaching the North Branch boys and girls cross country teams. Tom Kingsland, who was an assistant on the track and field team last year, takes over the top post for the cross country teams in 2013.
