St. Michael-Albertville 13, Chisago Lakes 10 (9 innings) The Wildcats and the St. Michael-Albertville Knights played a game that can be described as wild, exciting, sloppy and probably a few unprintable adjectives. Between the two teams, the game featured 23 runs (11 unearned), 24 hits (including 7 doubles), 11 walks, 15 strikeouts, 15 errors (!) and two extra innings. When it was all over, the Knights escaped Lindstrom with a 13-10 win. The game was played at Chisago Lakes High School Tuesday, April 18.
The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Henry Trost walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning and went to second on a balk. Brown later scored on a passed ball and the Wildcats led 3-2. St. Michael tied it up in the top of the second. The Wildcats re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Zane Brophy led off with a double to deep center. Mitch Barrett walked, Troy Biernath attempted a sacrifice bunt and reached first on an error to load the bases. Trost reached on another error, courtesy runner Connor Wilke scored and courtesy runner Joe Abrahamson was thrown out at the plate on the play.
The Knights scored one in the top of the third and two in the top of the fourth to go up 6-4. In the bottom of the inning, Barrett, Biernath and Trost singled to load the bases with no outs. Ferris’ ground ball forced Barrett out at home. Brown singled to right to drive in one and two more runs scored when Klick reached on an error. The Wildcats led 7-6. The Wildcats added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Trost reached second when the left fielder dropped a fly ball. Ferris singled to right to knock in Trost and then went to second on a passed ball. He scored on Brown’s double to center and the Wildcats led 8-5 going into the top of the seventh.
The Wildcat defense came up short in the top of the seventh as the Knights parlayed an error, a single, a passed ball, a balk, another error and a groundout into three runs to tie the game at 8-8. Knight pitching struck out three Wildcats in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. The Knights led off with a double in the top of the eighth and, one out later, the baserunner scored on a sacrifice fly to give them a 10-9 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Trost reach an error and stole second. He was caught off second and raced toward third. The second baseman made a bad throw to third and Trost came all the way around to score and tie the game at 10-10.
St. Michael managed just one hit in the top of the ninth and the Wildcats turned a double play. But four walks, an error and a passed ball led to three runs for the Knights. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Biernath singled and went to second when Trost was hit by a pitch. But Ferris flew out to center to end the game and one of the wildest games you’ll ever see was finally over, with the Wildcats on the short end of the stick.
