Thomas Overgaard headed to golf state after shooting a 147
Thomas Overgaard has been Chisago Lakes’ best golfer all year, but he knew the competition at Section 7AAA was going to test his mettle.
The sophomore was the leading scorer throughout the year in the Mississippi 8 Conference East Division.
But, stepping into Section 7AAA, there’s some big schools and some talented golfers out on the links, but Overgaard persevered and earned his first ever state tournament berth.
He shot a two-day total of 147, which put him in third place overall, behind only Ben Johnson of Andover, who shot a 142, and Drew Streeter of Anoka, who shot a 144.
In fact, Overgaard was the only underclassmen individual to quaify for state, and had the lowest score among non-juniors and seniors who earned berths from both the team and individual portions.
The next closest was Ihle Majeres, a freshman from Elk River, who carded a 148. The Elks earned the team state tourney berth with their score of 601 over the two day tourney at Hinckley Grand National Gof Course.
As a team, Chisago Lakes had some good scores put together, but they couldn’t find a fourth low score to compete for the section championship.
Overgaard’s 147 led them, while Tucker Bakken shot a 152 and Justin Lawry shot a 153.
The ‘Cats shot a 306 on the first day, but unfortunately, that left them one stroke out of playing on the second day.
