Wildcats pull away from Vikings early

Despite a feisty opening few minutes from the North Branch girls basketball team, Chisago Lakes used some lethal shooting and a vast size advantage to pull away from Vikings in the two team’s Mississippi 8 Conference scrum on Thursday, January 18.

Going into the game, North Branch wanted to focus on limiting Carmen Backes after she went for 32 and 11 rebounds against them in the first match up. They were effective in doing that, but the rest of the Wildcats stepped up in a big way.

Thea Kluge had a game and season high 21 points on seven three pointers. In fact, the senior didn’t even take a two point shot on the night.

Sophomore post Sophie Wood also used her height advantage to go six-of-10 in the paint, scoring 12 points and grabbing four rebounds.

“I thought we did a much better job defensively against Chisago Lakes the second time facing them,” North Branch Head Coach Jerome Huselid said. “They have many weapons and I thought we did a much better job on Backes, but we have to credit Kluge for stepping up. That was the difference in the game.  Even when we contested her shot she kept making them.  Her shooting spread out our defense creating a tough time defending them.”

The ‘Cats enjoyed a 17 point lead at halftime and built on it in the second half, eventually winning 67-35.

Backes still had a good stat line, scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 boards.

North Branch’s shooting struggles were evident again, as they shot just 11-of-37 from the field and three-of-13 from beyond the arc. Megan Bunes led them with 15 points.
