North Branch girls track wins fourth straight true team section title
Using remarkable consistency up and down their lineup, the North Branch girls track and field team captured their fourth straight True Team Section Championship on a cold, damp day in Cloquet.

Chisago Lakes has been a tough out all year. They had only lost two tennis matches in their 16 meets until they ran into Duluth East last week, who they could see in the Section 7AA crossover match up if seedings play out.

Minnesota Twins dedicate brand new "Old Pumphouse Field"
Saturday was a special day in Lindstrom. Pumphouse Park where many of us grew up playing baseball was recently renovated. The Minnesota Twins Community Fund donated money towards a new fence, infield, and warning track.

Chisago Lakes continues to face tough teams at STMA Invitational
The Wildcat track team continued to face tough competition, participating in the seven-team Ed Bourelle Invitational at St. Michael-Albertville High School Tuesday, April 26.  The boys finished fifth and the girls tied for sixth.  Wildcat head coach Ken Orwoll said “This meet really gave us a look at some really good athletes.  We were hoping to use it to help get kids to the Hamline Elite meet.  Unfortunately, we did not get anyone to qualify.

The St. Michael-Albertville Knights rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three times on their way to a 4-2 win over the Wildcats last Tuesday, April 19 at St. Michael.

Chisago Lakes track getting mixed results early in season

It was a cold day last Tuesday, April 12, when the Wildcats hosted a quadrangular with North Branch, Princeton and Hermantown.
 
Girls
The Chisago Lakes girls won their meet over North Branch by seven points.  North Branch didn’t run any relays and were missing some kids.  Izzy Hindt had a great day with firsts in the 200, 400 and 4-by 400.  Other members of the four by 400 relay team were Karly Hennen, Sally Nelson and Leah Higgins.  Hennen also won the 100 meter dash.  The four by 100 and four by 800 teams won as well.  Julia Nelson, Morgan Huberty, Kennedy Phillips and Selina Lee ran the four by 100 and Jess Bartz, Lindsey Craig, Juliette Martin, and Mariah Sistrunk ran the four by 800.  Wildcat head coach Ken Orwoll said,  “I was very impressed with Morgan Huberty's performance in the both hurdle races in such poor weather conditions.  She took second in both.”

Busy schedule hard on 'Cats, 1-4 on the week after NSP
St. Michael-Albertville 7, Chisago Lakes 4
St. Michael Albertville broke a 3-3 tie with pairs of runs in the fifth and sixth innings and went on to beat the Wildcats 7-4 at St. Michael  Tuesday, April 19.  In the second inning, Alison Gajeski squeezed home the first run of the game and Cassie Lynch followed two batters later with a two-run double to put the Wildcats up 3-0.  But the Knights tied it with a single run in the second and two runs in the third.  In the seventh, Brooke Mueller led off with a double.  One out later, Alex Smith singled her in.  But the Knights shut down the Wildcats after that to come away with the win.  Cassie Lynch started for the Wildcats and took the loss.

Wildcats win 3 in a row
St. Francis 9, Chisago Lakes 1
The St. Francis Fighting Saints broke open a scoreless tie with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to roll over the Wildcats 9-1 last Tuesday, April 12 at St. Francis.  Starting pitcher Tyler Stilp shut out the Fighting Saints for the first five innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine.  But in the sixth, Stilp and Trevor Johnson combined to allow nine runs on six hits and two walks.  Two errors and a balk didn’t help things, but seven of the nine runs were earned.

Chisago Lakes stays warm at indoor meet
The Wildcat track team opened the 2016 season with a trip to St. Michael Albertville last Tuesday, April 5 for an indoor quadrangular that included the hosts, along with St. Francis and Buffalo.  The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ teams both finished a distant third.

Chisago Lakes wins their first game of the season, a chilly contest again C-I
A cold spring couldn’t keep the Wildcat baseball team bottled up forever.  In the season opener last Thursday, April 7, starter Tyler Stilp pitched four innings of shutout baseball and Gabe Taylor and Henry Trost had two hits apiece to lead the Wildcats to an 8-2 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets.  The game was played at Adolph Larson Field in Cambridge.

Errors cost CL in loss against Jackets
The Wildcat softball team let their season opener against the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets slip through their fingers.  Literally.  Three Wildcat errors led to four Bluejacket runs, helping the Bluejackets to a 6-4 win last Thursday, April 7 at Cambridge-Isanti High School.

North Branch Peewee A team caps unbelievable season with state trip
The 2015-2016 North Branch Peewee A team just finished a truly historic season.

They are the first team ever from North Branch, at any level of hockey, to qualify for a Minnesota State Tournament appearance.  This group of  players, born in the years 2000-2003 have been over-achieving ever since they first started skating together as Mites seven to eight years ago.

The Chisago Lakes boys swimming and diving team represented themselves well at the state tournament last week, with the highlight being Jacob Carlson’s eighth place finish in diving,  despite battling pneumonia.

Pierce battles back to win third at state, Klick wins with dramatic pin
Wildcat junior Teddy Pierce (138) decisioned fellow junior Isaac Haman of Kasson-Mantorville 7-6 to take third place at last weekend’s state high school wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.  Pierce won his opening round match, lost in the quarterfinals and then won four straight matches in the wrestlebacks to claim the third place trophy.  Junior Adam Klick (220), after trailing throughout most of his opening round match, surprised his opponent and the crowd with a late pin in the third round to win his opening round match.  Klick lost his next two matches and did not place.  Senior Kyle Schoenecker (195), appearing in the tourney for a record-tying sixth year in a row, lost his first round match.  Since Schoenecker’s first round opponent lost his next match, Schoenecker did not get the opportunity to participate in wrestlebacks.  Senior Aaron Sistrunk (132) was pinned in his opening round match and lost his second match by major decision and did not place.  Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon missed most of the tournament due to a short illness, but had now recovered.

Chisago Lakes wins first ever section championship by just three points
There’s close margins, and there’s razor thin margins. And then there’s the amount Chisago Lakes won their first ever section title by last week.

The boys needed every second and every point in their competitions, as they edged second place Grand Rapids by only three points in a meet where 2,193 points were doled out. The Wildcats scored 366 points and the Thunderhawks of Grand Rapids scored 363 points.
