Vikes' title dreams shattered by Maple Lake, finish second at state
Expectations were certainly high for the North Branch volleyball team going into the state tournament, but the way they handled their first two opponents was a surprise, to say the least.

NORTH BRANCH UPSETS MANKATO WEST, PLAYS AT THE BANK
North Branch 3, Mankato West 2
Sadie Harper converted a penalty kick with 19 minutes left in the second half to give the #7-seeded Vikings a 2-1 lead and the Vikings held on for a 2-1 win over the Mankato West Scarlets in the opening round of the state high school girls’ soccer tournament.  The game was played in ideal conditions Wednesday, October 25 at Prior Lake High School and sent the Vikings on to the state semifinal game Monday, October 30 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Wildcats fall in first round of state
Totino Grace 4, Chisago Lakes 0
The Wildcats boys’ soccer team had a tough draw in their opening round game in the state tournament –  they had to play the best Class A team in the state, the Totino Grace Eagles.  The Eagles stymied the Wildcat offense while scoring three goals in the first half and one in the second to beat the Wildcats 4-0.  The game was played at Farmington High School on Tuesday, October 24.  The loss ended the season for the Wildcats.

Vikings will rematch Cloquet with a trip to state on the line

North Branch’s offense remained a little slower than they had been through the first seven games of the years, but their defense continued to pick up the slack in a 29-6 section victory over Grand Rapids on Saturday, October 28.

Second rematch doesn't go well for 'Cats, lose to Andover in final game of the year
Andover 50, Chisago Lakes 24
A relentless Andover Huskies offense, a key turnover and an injury to starting quarterback Henry Trost added up to a 50-24 defeat for the Wildcat football team in the Section 7AAAAA semifinals at Andover on Saturday, October 28.  The loss ended the season for the #5-seeded Wildcats (3-7) and sent the #1-seeded Huskies (7-2) on to host tomorrow night’s championship game against the #6-seeded St. Francis Fighting Saints (3-7).  St. Francis, whom the Wildcats beat earlier this season, upset #2-seeded Coon Rapids in the other semifinal to earn the right to play Andover for a trip to the state tournament.

Vikings storm back for a second straight section championship, upset Mankato West in opening round of state
Facing long odds with one of their top players serving a red card suspension, the North Branch girls soccer team battled back from a 1-0 deficit in the section championship game to stun top-seeded Cloquet 2-1.

'Cats finally break through for a state tournament bid in Section 7
The Wildcat boys’ soccer team is headed to the state tournament.  After going zero for four in section championship games over the past 12 years, Nils Gulbranson and Ryan Mower led the #1-seeded Wildcats to a 3-1 win over the #4-seeded Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers in the Section 7A championship game Thursday, October 19 at Duluth Denfeld High School.  Longtime Wildcat head coach Mark Leigh is always the first one to tell you it’s all about the kids.  But this is certainly a nice parting gift for Leigh, who is retiring after this season.

North Branch fizzles in season finale, section rematch with Rapids up next
With the second seed locked up in Section 7AAAA, the Vikings didn’t have much to play for in their  regular season finale against Proctor, but after the high octane season they put on in their first seven games, it was a disappointing finale as North Branch lost  23-14.

It’s been some tough times recently for the Chisago Lakes volleyball team, but they reversed a lot of years of bad fortune with a nice 3-1 win over Monticello to close their regular season with their first conference win in four years.

Viking volleyball team cruising, with eyes on state championship
North Branch girls volleyball continued their epic season with a sweep of Mississippi 8 foe Big Lake.  The Vikings now have a record of 17-1 and have shown no signs of letting up in the late season.  Coach Mike Selbitschka saw the match as a tune-up for bigger and more difficult games in the future.

North Branch football team scores 44 straight points to smother Denfeld
The Vikings got down 12-0 early at home against the Duluth Denfeld Hunters.  But, like true Vikings, they rose to the occasion and battled back.  They scored 44 straight points on their way to a 52-20 win over Denfeld Friday, October 6 at North Branch High School.  The Viking machine piled up 512 yards of total offense.  Quarterback Aaron Robillard once again led the way.  He rushed 17 times for 244 yards and four touchdowns.  He was also 10 for 20 passing for 101 yards and a touchdown.

The Chisago Lakes swimming and diving team got their first taste of competing without Kalli Jo Olson and Payton Nelson, two stalwart elite state competitors who graduated last year. “We missed our state competitors, but we still performed strong in some events,” Head Coach Ellen Heath said after the match up with Big Lake.

Despite massive effort from Trost, CL falls to Becker in shootout
Any way you look at it, 100 points is a lot of points.  And 1,000 yards is a lot of yards.  So, if you are a fan of a lot of offense in a football game, you were in luck last Friday night when the Wildcats hosted the Becker Bulldogs in the season opener at Chisago Lakes High School.  The two teams combined to score exactly 100 points in a game with nine lead changes that featured over 1,029 yards of total offense.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats and their fans, the Bulldogs, with the help of some trickery, pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Wildcats 56-44.
