Boys fall short in section championship
The Chisago Lakes boys were disappointed they didn't win the section championship, but they still received a second place plaque.

For the third straight year, the Chisago Lakes boys basketball team was playing for a chance to go to the state tournament.

Chisago Lakes fencers excel at state and national tournaments
Chisago Lakes High School juniors Alec Cull and Fred Thibodeau put on a lot of miles and achieved some significant results over three consecutive weekends between February 11 and February 25.  Both Cull and Thibodeau competed at the Fargo-Moorhead High School Fencing Invitational February 11 and the USFA Open tournament February 12. The following week, Thibodeau traveled to Kansas City to compete at the U.S. Junior Olympic Fencing Championships. And both fencers competed at the Minnesota High School State Fencing Championships February 25.

Chisago Lakes finds new AD in Hayley Lang
The Chisago Lakes School District announced they've hired Hayley Lang as the new Activities Director at the high school. Lang, who is currently an assistant principal at Southwest Junior High in Forest Lake, was previously a teacher and coach at North Branch High School. She was the head coach of the Viking volleyball team and an assistant for the Lady Vikes' softball team. Lang will be replacing outgoing AD Neil Fletcher, who announced his resignation last month.

Ertl finishes ninth in all-around, Olson and Fish gain valuable experience
The balance beam was the last event of the day at the individual state gymnastics meet on Saturday, February 25. The anticipation led to a highlight of the weekend for a few of the North Branch state meet competitors, but it also led to disappointment for another.

NB's Sonnek headed to state
Freshman Austin Sonnek (132) will be the first Viking wrestler to go to the state tournament since 2014.  He pinned Tristan Johnson of Hibbing in the true second place match at last weekend’s individual Section 7AA tournament to earn his first trip to state.  The section tournament was held in Grand Rapids last weekend.  Sonnek will open the tournament during the 11 a.m. session tomorrow against junior Antonio Cortez of South St. Paul, the winner of Section 4AA.

Wildcats get sweet revenge, end North Branch's season
A raucous standing room only crowd of over 1,200 people for last Saturday night’s section 5A semifinal game at Chisago Lakes Arena saw the third-seeded Chisago Lakes Wildcats take a 4-1 lead over the second-seeded North Branch Vikings early in the third period.  The Wildcats then withstood an intense Viking attack before coming away with a 4-3 win and a trip to their third section final game in the last four years.  That game is tonight versus the Monticello Magic at 7 p.m. at the arena in Elk River.

Vikings wrap up regular season with 4-1 win over CL in hotly contested game
Tim Moll scored at 9:08 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie and give the North Branch Vikings their first lead of the game over the Chisago Lakes Wildcats.  The Vikings added two more goals in the last two minutes of the game for a 4-1 win over the Wildcats before a standing room only crowd of over 1,000 on Thursday, February 16 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  It was officially a home game for the Wildcats, but the crowd was split about 50-50 between fans of the two teams.

Chisago Lakes-North Branch rivalry renewed tonight with Vikings on a roll

Having played two games in the previous three days, a tired bunch of Viking hockey players trudged into Highland Arena in St. Paul to take on the St. Paul Highland Park Scots Tuesday, February 17.  “We were out of gas,” said Viking head coach Matt Cottingham.  “We were not on our ‘A’ game and didn’t know what was going to happen.”  But the Vikings have matured to the point they can win a game against an opponent they should probably beat even when they are not at their best.  Ryan Byrkit scored with just over six minutes left in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and the Vikings went on to win the game 4-2.

Princeton storms back to end Wildcats' season in overtime

The Wildcat girls’ hockey team certainly went out with a bang this season.  In the Section 5A quarterfinals, the sixth-seeded Wildcats took third-seeded Princeton to two overtimes before the Tigers scored to beat the Wildcats 4-3.  The game was played a Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis last Thursday, February 9.  The loss ended the season for the Wildcats (7-19-0).  Princeton (19-8-0) is ranked fifth in the state in the QRF rankings.  They went on to play Breck in the section semifinals on Valentine’s Day and lost 2-1 to end their season.

QUEENS OF THE HILL: The Chisago Lakes girls alpine ski team wins state title
The Chisago Lakes girls alpine ski team won the school's first ever team state championship on Wednesday, February 15 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, MN.

The girls finished with 152, nine points ahead of Lakeville North in second place. The 'Cats were paced by Ellie Frischmon, who came in fourth plae in the whol state. Hannah Stec earned CL's second top-10 finish at state with an eighth place run. Senior Mikayla Granfors had an amazing final career run and finished in 11th place in state. Hannah Janzig finished off CL's championship score with a 21st place finish.

Streaky Wildcats drop four M8C contests in a row, including Monti
The Chisago Lakes boys basketball team has been a streaky bunch this year. They opened the season with four straight losses before winning four of their next five games. Those winning ways were followed up by three straight losses before they rattled off five consecutive wins. In their latest streak, the ‘Cats have now dropped four in a row, including a one-point heartbreaker to Monticello, the team that ended their season last year.

North Branch stays rolling at six in a row, including win over Princeton

Sophomore Brady Meyer recorded his fourth hat trick of the season and playmaker Nick Fairbanks had four assists as the Vikings sent the Becker-Big Lake Eagles crashing to earth in a 9-0 shutout win Tuesday, January 31 at Princeton Ice Arena.  The Vikings scored six goals in the second period to blow the game wide open, and outshot the Eagles 40-13 for the game.  Viking goalie Trevor Mellen stopped all 13 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season.

After a successful five year stint as Chisago Lakes’ Activities Director, Neil Fletcher will be calling it a career after the 2017 school year ends.

The Chisago Lakes girls alpine ski team won the Section 7 meet this week to qualify for the state tournament in Giants Ridge next Wednesday. Ellie Frischmon won the meet.

On the boys side, Anders Brown won the individual race and will be going to the state tournament for his sixth appearance.

In the Mississippi 8 Conference, the North Branch Vikings rarely come across an elite Class A team. Big Lake had been in the past but they are a bit down this year. Cambridge-Isanti is an elite team, but they are Class AA and North Branch won’t see them in sections or state.

Danceline hosts Mississippi 8 Conference meet at Chisago Lakes
Chisago Lakes High School DanceTeam earned the overall highest score in Mississippi 8 Conference competition, held Saturday January 14 at Chisago Lakes High School.  The finish was: Chisago, St Francis in second place and third place  was Rogers.  In the Jazz dance routine competition-- Chisago Lakes won third place in varsity, Rogers won second in varsity and St Francis took first in varsity jazz.  Junior varsity jazz division was won by Rogers, followed by St Francis and Chisago Lakes.  The High Kick routine contest was won by Chisago Lakes, followed by Rogers and St Francis.  The junior varsity kick was won by Chisago Lakes, followed by St Francis and Monticello ........There will be section finals held at North Branch High School February 4-- and teams that take first, second and third places in sections advance to compete at the state dance team meet,  at Target Center Feb 17 and 18.  Additional section competition photos are on the back page.

The Chisago Lakes gymnastics team is in the middle of a rebuilding project, and they’ve been steadily climbing up to what culminated in a season-high score at the Big Lake Tropical Twist Invitational on Saturday, January 7.

Lawry goes off for CL in 6-4 win

Jenna Lawry got a hat trick and more against the Holy Angels/RIchfield Stars.  She scored the last four Wildcat goals, all on the power play, to lead the Wildcat girls’ hockey team to a 6-4 win over the Stars last Thursday at Richfield Ice Arena.  Playmaker Madison Lundeen assisted on all four of Lawry’s goals.  For the Wildcats, a power play that had been largely nonexistent so far this season – converting just four of 35 chances – came alive against Holy Angels.  The Wildcats converted four of seven power play opportunities against the Stars.  “We have been working on the power play in practice,” said Wildcat head coach Dave Burgen.  “We already had nice passing, but we encouraged them to shoot more.  The turning point of the game was having the power play unit put in four pucks in the net like they did.”  And the Wildcats themselves managed to steer clear of the penalty box for the most part, killing off the only Holy Angels power play opportunity of the night.

CL gets a massive win over Tigers to stay undefeated in section play

In a key conference and section matchup, Darin Krueger scored 18 seconds into overtime to give the Wildcats a 5-4 win over the Princeton Tigers last Friday, January 6 at Princeton Ice Arena.  The Wildcats trailed 4-2 entering the third period.  Andrue Trelstad scored a shorthanded goal with less than five minutes to go to pull the Wildcats within one and Brandon Caudill tied it with a power play goal 90 seconds later to send the game into overtime.

Chisago Lakes fends of surging North Branch
Cooper Hoheisel’s goal with 16 seconds left in the second period gave the Chisago Lakes Wildcats a 3-1 lead and proved to be the game winner as the Wildcats hung on to beat the North Branch Vikings 3-2 before a packed house split evenly between Wildcat fans and Viking fans Thursday, December 5 at Chisago Lakes Arena.

Lady 'Cats fall in Schwan Cup championship game

In the championship game of the Open Division of the Schwan Cup, scoring opportunities were hard to come by for both teams.  The Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets outshot the Wildcats girls’ hockey team 19-11.  The Bluejackets, a fellow member of the Mississippi 8 Conference, were able to take advantage of two of their opportunities and shut out the Wildcats 2-0  The loss snapped the Wildcats’ four game winning streak.  The game was played at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota last Wednesday, December 28.

It took a true team effort for the Wildcat girls’ hockey team to pick up their first win of the season after eight straight losses.  Five different players scored goals for the Wildcats as they beat the St. Paul Blades 6-3 in front of the home fans at Chisago Lakes Arena on Tuesday, December 20.
