Wildcats win sixth in a row with big comeback against Buffalo
Chisago Lakes 77, Forest Lake 64
Already in the midst of a small winning streak, the Wildcats kept their positive vibes going throughout last week.

After topping county rival North Branch, the Wildcats took on Lakes Area foe Forest Lake. The two teams don’t meet often, but there is a mutual disdain between the two schools, but Chisago Lakes came away with bragging rights this time.

Dancers light up Chisago Lakes High School with slick moves
A total of 11 teams were participating as  North Branch and Chisago Lakes jazz and high kick teams went up against competitors in the January 30 section contest,  held at Chisago Lakes High School west gym.  Neither of the local teams finished in the top three (jazz routines for both Vikettes and Lakettes are pictured)   Totino Grace E-Gals won both the Jazz and Kick divisions to advance to the state high school danceteam contest.  Benilde St Margaret took the second places  in jazz and in high kick.  Third place, in Jazz,  went to Duluth Denfeld and Fridley took third place in Kick.

A few 'Cats just miss out on conference championships in wrestling
Mississippi 8 Conference Wrestling Tournament
Host St. Michael-Albertville, ranked second in Class AAA, dominated last Friday’s Mississippi 8 Conference Wrestling Tournament and easily won the conference championship.  Eight Knight wrestlers finished first in their respective weight classes and a Knight wrestler placed at all 14 weights.  Meanwhile, both the Vikings and the Wildcats fielded limited lineups as they try to get their teams ready for sections starting next week.  The Wildcats send eight wrestlers and four of them placed.  They finished in eighth place out of ten teams, in a cluster with Monticello, Big Lake and Rogers.  The Vikings only place one wrestler, Bailey Adams (285) and finished at the back of the pack in tenth place.

After dropping their county rivalry game to Chisago Lakes, the Vikings hosted the Mayer Lutheran Crusaders for a non-conference tilt and it didn’t go very well for the Vikings.

Despite a bug going around the Chisago Lakes gymnastics team, they scored season highs in both varsity and junior varsity against Buffalo last week, but it wasn’t enough to best the talented Bison.

In the second half of the county doubleheader on Thursday, January 21, the Wildcats evened the score on the night with a blowout win over North Branch. Earlier in the night, North Branch’s girls team had won big over Chisago Lakes.

Viking wrestlers finish seventh
The Vikings hosted the North Branch Invitational last Friday, January 22 and finished seventh out of eight teams.  Individually, with a second place showing at 285 Bailey Adams was the only Viking to finish higher than fourth place in the tournament.  He made it to the championship match at 285 before being pinned by Walter Russek of Delano with four seconds left in the first period.

With the strength of the Wildcat wrestling lineup in the middle and upper weights, it’s no surprise that the Wildcats trailed big early against Rogers before coming back to beat the Royals 38-28 in a dual meet last Thursday, January 21 at Rogers High School.

Vikings drop two - play better

Trevor Mellon played another good game in the nets for the Vikings, stopping 52 of the 57 shots he faced at the Rogers Activity Center last Thursday, January 21.  But the Royals dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Vikings 57-10.  Cody Moline scored the Vikings’ only goal with a couple of minutes left in the first period, assisted by Jared Kozar and Brady Meyer.

Wildcat girls drop three games
Buffalo 7, Chisago Lakes 0
Buffalo outshot the Wildcat girls’ hockey team just 6-4 in a scoreless first period.  But the Bison turned on the jets after that, scoring twice in the second period and five times in the third to shut out the Wildcats 7-0 Tuesday, January 19 at the Buffalo Civic Center.  Buffalo ended up outshooting the Wildcats 36-12 for the game.

North Branch adds to Hall of Fame
The North Branch Athletic Hall of Fame added five members last week, and it was a family affair. Sisters Shannon Devine, Meghan (Devine) Baig, Sheena Devine-Remitz as well as Joe Remitz and Britt Baumann were all inducted for their athletic achievements while at North Branch. The Devine sisters excelled in volleyball, basketball and track and field while Remitz and Baumann were both football standouts. Remitz also won a state championship as a thrower for the North Branch track and field team. Baumann was also a very skilled basketball player for the red-and-white.

Wildcat boys hockey on a roll

In the bungle in the jungle Tuesday, January 19 at Chisago Lakes Arena, the Wildcat boys’ hockey team did a great job protecting their home territory with an 8-1 thrashing of the Legacy Christian Academy Lions.  Chasse Heiskala and Andrue Trelstad had two goal apiece to lead the Wildcats.  Cooper Hoheisel and Brandon Caudill each had a goal and two assists.  Landon Lushanko and Darin Krueger each contribute a goal.  Five other players had one assist apiece: CJ Haskins, Lushanko, Nic Bartz, Evan Boudreau and goalie Bryce Thompson.  The Wildcats outshot the Lions 44-13 for the game and Thompson stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced to pick up the win.

Buffalo’s domination of the Viking boys’ hockey team last Thursday, January 14, can be shown by one comparison:  the Bison scored seven goals while the Vikings had just eight shots on goal for the entire game.  In fact, the Bison outshot the Vikings 46-8 and outscored them 7-0.  The game was played at the Buffalo Civic Center.  The Bison used powers plays to their advantage, scoring on three of five opportunities, while the Vikings were shut out on three power play chances.  The game featured 40 minutes in penalties between the two teams, including a major and a game misconduct against the Vikings and a major and a double minor against Buffalo.

Five pins helped to lead the Wildcat grapplers to a 55-21 win over Rush City/Braham last Thursday, January 14 at Chisago Lakes.  The score was 37-21 in favor of the Wildcats before Rush City forfeited the last three weights.  Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon was impressed with the Rush City performance.  He said “They have some kids that have come a long way.  They put up a good fight at some weights before the score got out of hand.”

Morgan Huberty scored with four minutes left in the second period, assisted by Hailey Thorsen, to cut the Wildcat girls’ hockey team’s deficit against Rogers to 3-1.  But that was as close as the Wildcats would get, as Rogers went on to win 4-1 last Tuesday, January 12 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  Rogers outshot the Wildcats 29-20 for the game.

The Wildcats trailed 2-0 late in the first period when they got a power play opportunity and a chance to cut the Royals’ lead to one.  But the Royals scored a shorthanded goal with a minute left in the period to go up 3-0.  Any chance the Wildcats had to get back into the game late evaporated when they took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at 14:49 of the third period.  Rogers scored the game’s final goal on the ensuing power play.

Injuries proving difficult to overcome

The Wildcats had many chances to take their first victory of 2016 when they took on Princeton early last week.

They bursted out to a 17-4 lead over the Tigers. But Princeton, the defending section champions, didn’t go away easily, closing to withing four at the halftime break.
Chisago Lakes popped back out of the locker room in the second half on fire, though. They went on a 10-2 run, behind four points from senior Kailey McKnight. Quickly, CL was up 31-19.

After losing to always-tough Monticello in their first Mississippi 8 Conference tilt of the year, the Wildcats were able to get in the win column in their second match against Cambridge-Isanti on Tuesday, January 7.

North Branch Girls - Split two contests
The Lady Vikes split two games last week, winning a conference match up against Buffalo before losing to non-conference foe Chatfield.
In the Buffalo game,  Megan Becklin came through big time for North Branch, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 boards for her first career double-double.

The Vikings jumped to an early lead and were up 31-16 at halftime before easing into a 58-43 victory. Courtney Selbitschka and Morgen Coleman each had 20 points in the win.

Wildcats cut past NWSC competition for big victory
Northwest Suburban Conference Meet - Boys
The boys absolutely dominated the Northwest Suburban Conference Meet at Wild Mountain on Tuesday, January 5.

They put three skiers in the top four spots and cruised to a 125 point victory over Centennial and the rest of the Northwest Suburban Conference.
Anders Brown was the top finisher for Chisago Lakes and for the whole meet. He came in with a combined time of 1:02.67 after having the top time on both the red and the blue course.

Wildcats take in a wild week
The Wildcats began a busy five day stretch with three dual meet wins against some northern foes at Proctor High School on Tuesday, January 5.  They opened with a 44-24 win over Cloquet/Esko.  “Cloquet is an up and coming team,” said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon.  “They have some tough wrestlers.  We won all the tight ones and once we hit the middle weights, we started to pull away.  It was a good section win for us.”

Chisago Lakes girls fall to Zephyrs

With the score tied 1-1, the Mahtomedi Zephyrs scored twice in the last few minutes of the third period to beat the Wildcats 3-1 Saturday, January 9 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The Zephyrs outshot the Wildcats 31-14 for the game.  Wildcat goaltender Kallie Romero did her best to keep the Wildcats in it, stopping 28 of the 31 shots she faced.  The loss extended the current losing streak for the Wildcats (2-15-0 overall) to five games.

Landon Lushanko had a goal and two assists to lead the Wildcat boys’ hockey team to its biggest win so far this season, a 4-2 Triumph over the Buffalo Bison Saturday, January 9 at the Buffalo Civic Center.  The Bison outshot the Wildcats 36-17 for the game.  Wildcat goaltender Bryce Thompson came up big, stopping 34 of the 36 shots he faced.

Vikings finish fifth out of 10 teams at Ogilvie Invitational
St. Francis 54, North Branch 18
The Vikings tied St. Francis 18-18 in contested matches, but the undermanned Vikings had to forfeit five matches in the middle and upper weights and lost 54-18 to the Fighting Saints last Thursday, January 7 at St. Francis.  Jack Anderson opened the dual by pinning Zach Pogorelec in the first period.  Ryan Senne (120) decisioned Zach Bonte 8-2 and the Vikings led 9-0.  But the Vikings lost the next three matches, forfeited five and then lost another before Cody Forse (220) pinned Jasper Axelson near the end of the first period.  Bailey Adams finished off the night with a 5-2 decision over Levi Ross.  “One of the goals we have had as coaches,” said Viking assistant coach Kyle Kahl, “was to get the wrestlers to be more physical and set the tone in their matches.  The final team score doesn’t show it, but we accomplished that against St. Francis.”

'Cats competitive at Schwan's Cup, grab one win out of three

In the opening game of last week’s Schwan’s Cup (Open Division), Brandon Caudill scored for the Wildcats to cut the Minneapolis lead to 2-1.  But Minneapolis scored twice in the last two minutes of the game, including an empty-netter with 16 seconds remaining, to beat the Wildcats 4-1.  Shots were nearly even in this one, with Minneapolis outshooting the Wildcats 25-21 for the game.  Landon Lushanko assisted on Caudill’s goal.  The tournament was held at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, and the opening game was played on Monday, December 28.

CL's struggles continue in Hastings Tournament, go 0-3

Park of Cottage Grove scored twice in a span of 21 seconds late in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and went on to win 5-2 over the Wildcat girls hockey team in the opening round of the Hastings Holiday Invitational.  The game was played Monday, December 28 at Hastings Civic Arena.  The Wildcats were outshot 26-14 for the game.

North Branch grounded at Flyer Tournament, beat LCC
The Viking boys’ hockey team headed out of town last week to play in the Little Falls Holiday Tournament and came back home with some injuries and three defeats.  They lost the opener to the Willmar Cardinals 6-3 on Monday, December 28.  On Tuesday, they fell to Mandan, ND 5-1.  And Little Falls weren’t very gracious hosts in Wednesday’s final game, with the Flyers shutting out the Vikings 11-0.

After opening the game with one of their worst periods of the year against Mora and falling behind 2-0, the Viking boys’ hockey team came back to play one of their best periods of the year and tied the score at 2-2.  But they lapsed back into some bad habits in the third period and the Mustangs scored twice, including an empty-netter with just over a minute to go in the game, to beat the Vikings 4-2.  The game was played at the Mora Civic Center last Tuesday, Jun 15.

After a few tough matches to open the season, first-year Head Coach Alex Thomsen got her first career win when the Wildcats toppled the Princeton Tigers in a battle of conference feline foes on Monday, December 21.

Young 'Cats struggling in 2015

The Wildcat girls’ hockey team played just once in the past week and lost 7-1 to the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets at Isanti Ice Arena on Friday, December 11.  Claire DeVries scored the lone goal for the Wildcats, with seven minutes to go in the game, to avoid the shutout.  She was assisted by Morgan Huberty.  The struggling Wildcats (1-9 overall, 0-4 conference)) head to the Phalen Recreation Center in St. Paul to take on the St. Paul Blades tonight at 7 p.m.  Tuesday, December 22 they will return home to Chisago Lakes Arena to face the Mississippi 8 Conference leaders, North Wright County, at 7 p.m.
