The 400 meter dash proved to be the premier event for the Wildcats at the St. Michael-Albertville (STMA) Quadrangular held Tuesday, March 31 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.  Isabel Hindt won the girls’ race in 1:02.74, beating the second place finisher by 4.5 seconds.  And Quinton Lee won the boys’ race with a time of 52.95 seconds, nearly three seconds ahead of his opponent.  Overall, the host school dominated the day.  The Wildcat girls finished a distant second to STMA, barely edging out North Branch and Cambridge-Isanti.  And the boys came in a distant third behind STMA and Cambridge-Isanti and just ahead of North Branch.  The meet was moved from indoors to outdoors because of good weather.  “I bet you don’t hear that too often,” said Wildcat boys’ head coach Ken Orwoll.  “It was a great day to be outside.”

Errors already costly for North Branch baseball team
Early season errors are always a problem for Minnesota baseball teams.

They aren’t able to be outside constantly honing their craft, and it takes a few full speed games to get back into the groove.

North Branch’s yips, though, cost them in their first game of the year against Faribault.

At last weekend’s state high school wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Wildcat senior Dylan Connell came within seconds of getting a chance to wrestle for the AA state championship at 132 pounds.  But the referee awarded a controversial stalling point with 18 seconds left in Connell’s semifinal match against junior Jackson Sweeney of Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran to tie their match at 3-3, and Sweeney went on to win 6-3 in overtime.  Connell ended up finishing third, making this the third year in a row he has placed at the state tournament.  Connell becomes just the second Wildcat wrestler to place more than twice at the state tournament, trailing only Dan Dellwo, who placed four times in the mid-1990s.

Eight athletes going to the state meet is a lot in any sport.

'Cats season ended by Zephyrs
Mahtomedi 7, Chisago Lakes 1
What looked to be a highly competitive Section 4A quarterfinal matchup between the fifth-seeded Wildcats and the fourth-seeded Mahtomedi Zephyrs turned into a rout early on.  The lethargic Wildcats watched as Kaliey Heinl (yes, it’s spelled correctly) skated circles around them and scored four goals in the first 8:45 of the game.  The Wildcats seemed to shake off whatever was ailing them after the fourth goal and played the game that everyone had expected.  But they had dug themselves too deep of a hole and went on to lose 7-1, ending their season.  The game was played at St. Thomas Arena in Inver Grove Heights last Saturday afternoon, February 7.

Wildcats lose two games to best M8C has to offer
St. Michael-Albertville 77, Chisago Lakes 47
Chisago Lakes girls basketball hosted fourth-ranked St. Michael-Albertville early last week.  They fared just about as well as every other Mississippi 8 Conference opponent has against the Knights, which is, not very well.

The Knights closest M8C game so far this year was a 24 point win over Cambridge-Isanti. “We knew going in that this would be our toughest competition of the season,” Head Coach Craig Walker said. “They are all very good athletes and we don’t match up well against them.”

Lady Vikes earn two wins

Score two for the Wildcats in the Chisago County rivalry
The first meeting of the year for Chisago Lakes and North Branch boys basketball team produced some late game dramatics and a close affair throughout.

The second matchup on Thursday, January 22, however, lacked the suspense of the first one with Chisago Lakes running away early against the Vikings.
