Chisago Lakes' Carlson and Wenthe heading to state wrestling tournament
After being shut out of the state tournament last year, the Wildcats will send two wrestlers down to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul this weekend.  At last weekend’s Section 4AA tournament, junior Josh Wenthe, seeded second in the section at 160 pounds, pinned his opponent in a wild semifinal match, lost the championship match and didn’t need to wrestle a True Second match to advance.  At 285, top-seeded Zach Carlson pinned all three of his opponents to advance to state.  Both wrestlers will be making their first appearance at the state tournament.  The Section 4AA individual tournament was held Friday and Saturday, February 23 and 24, at South St. Paul High School.

Wildcats upset Minneapolis in first round, but run into Breck in second
Chisago Lakes 3, Minneapolis 0
The fifth-seeded Wildcat girls’ hockey team picked a good time “to play one of the best games we’ve played all season long,” said Wildcat head coach Dave Burgen – their first section playoff game.  The Wildcats scored early in the first period and added a couple of power play goals in the third period to beat the fourth-seeded Minneapolis Novas 3-0 in the Section 5A quarterfinals.  Wildcat goalie Megan Lerfald stopped all 26 shots she faced to earn the shutout win.  It was the first playoff win for the Wildcats since they won the consolation championship at the state tournament in 2012.  The game was played at Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis on Wednesday, February 7.  The win sent the Wildcats to the section semifinal game against top-seeded Breck this past Tuesday, February 13, also at Parade Ice Garden.

Vikings find a way to beat Wildcats in a much tighter affair
Sudden-death overtime goals are generally exhilarating for the winners and crushing for the losers, especially in a big game or in a rivalry game.  But the end to the Vikings’ 2-1 overtime boys’ hockey win over the Wildcats at Chisago Lakes Arena last Saturday, February 3 was almost anticlimactic.  55 seconds into overtime, after a Viking shot from the right point and some chaos in front of the net, the referee blew the whistle when he couldn’t see the puck.  A Wildcat player had his glove covering the puck deep in the crease.  “The referee said he was going to call a penalty shot,” said Viking head coach Matt Cottingham, “but he noticed both the glove and the puck were over the goal line.  So, he correctly called it a goal and the game was over.”  Brady Meyer, who was the last Viking player to touch the puck after getting his stick on the rebound, was awarded the goal.  Zach Larson, who took the shot from the point that eventually led to the goal, received an assist.

North Branch 3, Rogers 2
Cody Moline scored with five seconds left in the second period to put the Vikings up by one goal over the Rogers Royals at 3-2.  The Vikings and goalie Jake Turek kept the Royals at bay in the third period and the Vikings won by the same score.  Special team play was the key to victory in this one.  All three Viking goals came on the power play as they converted three of six chances.  The Vikings killed all three Rogers power play opportunities.  The Vikings outshot the Royals 30-20 for the game and Turek stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced for his third win of the season.  The game was played at Chisago Lakes Arena in Lindstrom on Tuesday, January 23.
