In its toughest test of the season so far, the Wildcat football team was tied with Princeton 7-7 at halftime.  But Joe Kimlinger scored a touchdown on the Wildcats’ first drive after halftime for a 14-7 lead the Wildcats would never relinquish,  beating the Tigers 21-14.  The game was played Friday, September 19 at Princeton.

North Branch's stable of running backs come through
When Sam Ferraro took over the head coaching position at North Branch this year, he probably didn’t think he’d be on his fourth and fifth option at running back three and a half games into the season, but that’s the exact situation he found himself in last Friday.
The Vikings hosted Duluth Denfeld in a battle of 0-3 teams on Friday, September 22.

Vikings boys soccer splits two
North Branch 1, Princeton 1 (OT)
A bad bounce in the first half may have kept the Vikings from a win over Princeton.  Instead of being the game-winner, Dawson Linkert’s second half goal meant the Vikings had to settle for a 1-1 overtime tie. The game was played at North Branch on Thursday, September 18.

Chisago Lakes bests Knights, ties section foe Duluth Denfeld
Chisago Lakes 1, St. Michael-Albertville 0
Aidan Tollefson scored the only goal for the Wildcats, assisted by Joe Nagy, as they beat St. Michael-Albertville 2-0 last Thursday, September 18 at St. Michael.  In the first minute of the second half, Nagy had a ball on the right side, beat one player to clear himself and passed it across to Tollefson.  Tollefson put a shot past the St. Michael keeper into the lower left corner to give the Wildcats the only goal they would end up needing.  The Wildcats played well defensively in this game, but Wildcat head coach Mark Leigh was a little frustrated at his team’s inability to score.  “We missed one chance to just tap the ball into the net,” he said.  “We put a couple more balls over the top of the net from almost point blank range.  We are missing some players due to injury, but that’s no excuse for missing out on some prime scoring opportunities.”

Wildcats put a beatdown on Duluth East, move to 3-0
Home field advantage didn’t help the Duluth East Greyhounds, and neither did anything they tried on the field, when they hosted the Wildcat football team in Duluth last Friday, September 12.  The Wildcats dominated from the start, led 34-0 at half and played a lot of subs in the second half as they shut out the Greyhounds 41-0.  The Wildcats raised their record to 3-0 for the season, while the Greyhounds dropped to 0-3.
Quarterback Joe Kimlinger had a perfect game passing, going 4 of 4 for 70 yards and a touchdown.  No Wildcat carried the ball more than five times as the Wildcats piled up 317 yards on the ground on just 29 carries.  Running back Joe Virga led the Wildcats with 102 yards rushing on just four carries, including an 85 yard run in the second quarter.  Three other Wildcats rushed for 50 or more yards.  Offensive utility player Will “Jim Jensen” Gillach ran four times for 58 yards, Kimlinger rushed five times for 61 yards, and Drake Gadbois had a light workload for a fullback, piling up 51 yards on just four carries.

Vikings tear through Denfeld
North Branch’s volleyball team turned over a new leaf last week in their early season destruction of Duluth Denfeld. The Hunters were overmatched from the start, just barely reaching double digits in two of the three sets. After cruising to a 25-11 victory in the first set, the Lady Vikes kept rolling, winning 25-8 in the second set. In the third set, it could’ve been easy for the Vikings to ease up and let Denfeld crawl back into it. But, to North Branch’s credit, they didn’t let up with their intensity, even when the subs checked in, winning 25-10. They looked to be in midseason form in their match up.

Vikings and 'Cats schedules likely to stay very similar after district alignments announced
Minnesota State High School League schools should no longer have a reason to travel far out of state to find football opponents or play less than an eight-game regular season football schedule. The League Board of Directors today unanimously adopted a plan that places all member schools with football programs into Districts. The members of each district will divide the district into sub-districts, and then create a full schedule for each team. In nearly all cases the placement of schools will not negatively affect traditional rivalries or preferred opponents.
