State health improvement program a boon to schools

Schools in Chisago County have plans to spend a whole host of “SHIP” grants on  activities and equipment to enhance health.  The state health improvement program (SHIP) has grants of up to $1,500,  to award to qualifying applicants and Chisago County schools have several projects ready to go.

North Branch Sunrise River Elementary School wants to create a “fitness trail” and buy some recess equipment and get materials to promote the healthy eating challenge the school offers.

North Branch High School has plans for raised bed garden space , yoga mats for sessions at al schools and site coordinator hours.

North Branch Middle School would like to use its SHIP grant for a garden and Wellbeing Group and site coordinator.

Chisago Lakes School District is looking to help fund a SHIP related coordinator hours, buy transport carts and acquire computer software that informs users on the schools’ food offered and how they are prepared “Nutrislice.”

Chisago Lakes Community Education Dept. plans to improve a space to facilitate breastfeeding needs of mothers and female staff,  involved in the Community Ed programs.

Taylors Falls Elementary School wants to add to its Hokki stool inventory and get a second hydration station for the upper wing.  The stools allow for movement by a student seated atop them.

Rush City Schools will hopefully utilize its SHIP grant funds to buy a salad bar (Chisago high school has also acquired a salad bar through SHIP) and to provide some stand-up desks and two hydration stations for district sites.

Rush City Community Education also applied for pickeball and tennis court equipment expenses to be covered.

(Chisago County  is also using a SHIP grant for small refrigerator capacity in three areas in county buildings designated as lactation rooms.)
