Scholarship students noted at Senior Awards Night
Chisago Lakes High School held its annual Senior Awards night on Monday, May 9, 2016.  During the event over $230,000 was awarded to over  60 students from the class of 2016. Scholarships were given from many local organizations and the Chisago Lakes Education Foundation. In addition to these local contributors a total of 18 scholarships were given from the Franz and Myrtrice Moody fund.  Each of these 18 scholarships were for $10,000.

Filing deadline for NB School Board seat May 17
North Branch Area Public Schools will host an election on Tuesday, August 9, to fill a vacancy on the school board. The election will be held in conjunction with the state primary and one individual will be elected to fill the school board vacanct term expiring on January 7, 2019.

North Branch bond update
In less than two weeks;  voters living in the North Branch School District will be asked to vote on a bond sale for $62.1 million.  The district wants to use the bonding proceeds for a list of items the district has identified including new furnishings for schools, a consumer sciences classroom, new school sports and community activities structure,  and systems upgrades districtwide.

Barnes and Noble favorite teacher nominee in NB
Middle school teacher Eli Davies was presented with the Barnes and Noble Favorite Teacher Award last Thursday! Amber Reed, Community Business Development Liaison, and Michelle Rogers, Manager of the Maplewood Barnes and Noble, came to North Branch Area Middle School to present the award. Alixandra Petrik (8th grade) entered her essay into the contest and was selected as a winner. In her essay, she highlighted the wonderful work Mr. Davies does in the classroom. Davies and Petrik were also given $500 in gift certificates to the store.

Team 3038 takes on tough region contest at U of M
The North Branch - Chisago Lakes Robotics Team 3038 got off to a fast start at the 10,000 Lakes Regional competition April 8 compiling a 4-0 record before dropping the next three matches to end the day 4-3.  They returned to their winning ways with a decisive 95-25 win.  Team mentor Scott Frischmon commented, "the robot performed very well except for a battery issue at the end of the day Friday."  Mentor Becky Leuer complimented the drive team of Emma Schildgen (CL), Colt Seldon (NB), James Riley (NB), Dominic Hufford (NB), and Cole Dalquist (CL) for doing a great job on the field.

NB student selected for national physician mentorship
Elise Toussaint, a 10th Grader at North Branch Area High School, will be a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, MA June 25-27. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or pursue medical research fields. This event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.

North Branch students off to State History Day
Branch Area Middle School (NBAMS) students presented their History Day projects at the regional History Day competition held at the University of Minnesota, Duluth Campus.  Advancing to the state competition, which will be Sunday, May 1, at the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus are: Adam Richards,  Ryan Sanvik, Gavyn Jensen-Schneider, Abigail Schulte, Derrick Witte and Dylan Witte.

TF second graders make a difference
Second graders at Taylors Falls Elementary School sponsored a food drive for the Chisago Lakes Food Shelf.  The students have been reading about how people can make a difference in their community.  The students collected 329 food items.

North Branch Board adopts lengthy, but necessary, bond referendum ballot question
The North Branch School Board at their meeting last week,  unanimously adopted the ballot question going to voters in a district bond referendum  May 24.  
“One long sentence” is how Superintendent Dr Deb Henton described the bond authorization question;  but it’s written exactly to state standards governing wording of a facilities bond ballot.  Supt Henton told the Board the question content is necessary to inform voters of what the district plans to do; but exactly what amount of money is being spent on each need identified in the bond question hasn’t been shared yet.

CL, NB already meet 2020 grad rate of 90 percent, Wolf Creek still working on realistic graduation measurement
Minnesota Department of Education recently released data and reports on 2015 graduation rates for districts across the state. North Branch and Chisago Lakes high schools have already achieved the state goal of 90 percent that has been set for the Class of 2020.  And, just like the state’s overall data the trend for gradutaion rates of the last few years improved in North Branch and Chisago.

Work Skills Day a 'real life' demonstration of skills
The 39th  Annual Work Skills Day was held February 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, North Branch.  Fifty-Seven 11th and 12th grade students enrolled in Employability Skills Seminar classes from North Branch, Chisago Lakes and Rush City high schools competed in Job Applications, Job Interviewing and Job Problem Solving. Area business persons volunteered their time to serve as judges for the event.
