Agnes Vasquez

Agnes Vasquez of Lindstrom, age 74, died peacefully in her home Tuesday, October 23 at 11 a.m. She was the devoted wife of Joseph and the loving mother to Richard, Theresa, Toni, Debbie, Robert, and the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Agnes was born on September 18, 1938 in Devil’s Lake, ND to William and Hilda Coleman. She had a happy childhood with her siblings Marie, Rose, and William, Jr. Their mother fell ill at an early age and became bed ridden. She and her sisters continued running the household and taking care of their Dad.

There were many memories of Cherry Cokes ‘down in the hole’, homemade pickles and cleaning the house until it sparkled. At the age of 18, she left Devil’s Lake with her two best friends and moved to St. Paul. She was so proud as she moved into their brownstone apartment. Her first job was at the original White Castle in the old downtown. Shortly thereafter she met Joseph; they were married on October 12, 1957. Agnes worked at the Armour Meat Packing facility until her first child was born. Soon after, she left her job to start raising her family. God was important to her so she converted to Catholicism and became a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. She and Joseph were re-married by Father Ward in the eyes of God. She raised her children in lower St. Paul, surrounded by family. There were lots of fun and beautiful memories of picnics, huge holiday meals, and birthday parties with piñatas. When her youngest son started school, Agnes began working again in the family business as a bookkeeper. Several years later, they relocated to California where they lived for 12 years.

Agnes went back to work in the hotel services industry. She was respected and loved by her co-workers for her wisdom and gentle guidance. After retirement, she and her husband came to Lindstrom, MN. She could not remain idle for long, so she started caring for residents at Country Comfort Assisted Living. She was known for her kind words, soft touch, patient bedside manner, and great cooking (always from scratch). Diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2011, she fought a long hard battle with honor, dignity, perseverance, and unwavering faith in God. Her family rallied around her with support and respected her every wish. She was cared for by her family at home, until the very end. She had the enduring gifts of encouragement, amazing generosity, faith in others, always quick to forgive, selflessness, unpretentiousness, and non-judgmental. She accepted everyone at her table with unconditional love and kind heartedness. She will be forever remembered for this legacy of love. Her last earthly triumph was to be baptized a new creation in Christ on October 21.

Though she is so very missed, her family and friends rejoice with her as she enters her new heavenly home. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents William and Hilda, and brother William, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Joseph and sisters Marie (Sherman) and Rose (Francis). She had 5 children; sons Richard (Christine) and Robert (Felisa), daughters Theresa (Brian), Toni (John), and Debbie (Monte), thirteen grandchildren; Crystal, Melissa (Louis), Danielle, Gustavo, Daniel (Ramina), Robert Jr., Alexandria, Rachel, Mikayla, David, Joshua, Chase, and Noah. Nine great grandchildren; Lorenzo, Antonio, Fabian, Dominik, Aliyah, Cody, Camron, Jaeda, and the great grandchild to be born 2013. Celebration of Life 2 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Spirit & Praise Pentecostal Church, 5521 E. Viking Blvd., in Wyoming, Minnesota. Memorials preferred to: Linda Piersma Cancer Benefit Fund. Arrangements by Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom. Condolences may be left online at www.grandstrandfh.com.
