Carol (Nelson) Sandgren, a lifelong resident of the Chisago Lakes Area, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at her home in Lindstrom, MN.
She was 73 years old. Carol was born March 2 1940 at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis. She grew up on the family farm near Vibo Lake. Carol graduated from Chi Hi in Lindstrom with the class of 1958. After high school Carol moved to Minneapolis to work as a telephone operator. Carol married Pete Sandgren at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in 1960. They raised their family in Center City and retired in Lindstrom. Many will remember seeing Carol at the Bar Café in Center City, the Lindstrom Bakery or the Swedish Inn. With a smile on her face she worked hard serving countless customers who became her friends. Carol also faithfully took care of her parents, Wilbur and Lucille, for many years.
As a young woman, Carol enjoyed dancing and music and singing in the church choir. Carol and Pete loved to travel and took many road trips throughout the United States together. She also enjoyed bowling and fishing, gardening and cooking. Win or lose, going to the casino and playing video keno became Carol’s favorite pastime. Her children and grandchildren will treasure many fond memories of their mom and grandma. Playing games and cards, family gatherings and holiday meals, and the ever-present and always delicious G.C.D. will serve to remind them of their beloved “Grandma Carol.”
She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin “Pete” Sandgren and her parents Wilbur and Lucille Nelson. Carol is survived by her son Jeff and wife Lisa Sandgren and their children Joel, Sarah, Naomi, and Rebekah; her son Steve and wife Betsy Sandgren and their children Rob (Sarah), Dan, Mark, and Jake; her daughter Sheri and husband Tom Salewski and their children Pete (Tanya and great-granddaughter Finley), Bobby, Andrew and Ann; her sister Linda (John) Thorstad; and many relatives and friends. Carol’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, MN.
