Rachel E. Kania

Rachel E. Kania, age 90 of Chisago City died on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Ecumen Parmly Residence in Chisago City.

Rachel was born on April 13, 1922 at Medina, North Dakota to parents, John and Sophia (Steiger) Klein. She received her education in Medina through the eighth grade and eventually moved with her family to Sanborn, North Dakota. Rachel and all of her siblings were all very musically talented and she played the guitar. They had their own radio show on KOVC in Valley City, North Dakota. She and her brother Ruben also won 1st place in a talent show in 1940. Rachel married Tony Svoboda in 1940 in Valley City and they lived on a farm for a short time before moving into Valley City to raise their children. Rachel always loved music and dancing and she also had a wonderful knack of growing African violets and geraniums and also doing all sorts of crafts.

Rachel leaves behind her children, Marilyn (Jerry) Peterson of Alexandria, Clifford (Donna) Svoboda of Portland, OR, Bonnie (Duane) Danks of Centerville and Darlene Splittstoser of St. Anthony; her 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Sophia, her five brothers, Ted, John, Adam, Ruben and Benny as well as her two sisters, Martha Henke and Viola Guertin.

Memorial services are currently pending. Please call the Grandstrand Funeral Home at 651.257.4000 for information. A private family interment will take place at Woodbine Cemetery at Valley City, North Dakota. Memorials maybe directed to Ecumen Parmly Residence or to St. Croix Hospice.
