Verlie Irene Mattson
Verlie Irene Mattson Stenberg Lawrence, age 85, died at Ecumen Parmly LifePointes, in Chisago City August 18, 2013. Verlie was born at home on February 7, 1928 in Chisago Lake Township to Theodore and Myrtle (Olson) Mattson. She grew up in Lindstrom and graduated from Chisago Lakes High School in 1946.
As a girl she loved ice skating, playing the piano and singing. Some of her treasured memories were when she sang in a trio with her good friends Evie and Lois. The three of them sang at many class reunions over the years. She married Burton Stenberg on May 14, 1948 at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, MN. They owned a Red Owl store in Akeley, MN for a few years. After they sold the store, they moved to St. Paul before settling in White Bear Lake where they raised their four children. Burton died in a hunting accident October 21, 1968. Verlie worked for Target in North St. Paul, transferring with Target to open the first store in Tennessee and then moved to Arizona to open the first Target store there. She worked for Target for 16 years. She lived in Arizona for 23 years where she enjoyed line dancing, painting and she found a church home where she was the organist for the wonderful members of the Grace Christian Church.
Verlie met Russell Lawrence in Arizona and they married February 13, 1988. Their time together was all too short when he died November 19, 1990. She moved back to MN in 2006 to be closer to family, moving into the Point Pleasant Community in Chisago City. After moving back to MN she began watching MN Twins games. She also enjoyed reading western novels, historical novels and her Bible. She was a member of the Forest Lake Christian Church. She went into Ecumen Parmly LifePointes in March 2013. She is preceded in death by husbands Burton Stenberg and Russell Lawrence, one brother, two sisters, one grandchild, and one great grandchild.
Verlie is survived by children Kevin (Sue) Stenberg of Akeley, MN, DeeDee (Loren) Else of Rochester, MN, Laura (Ross Spriggs) Gentle of Minneapolis, MN, and Jeff (Julie) Stenberg of Tinley Park, IL; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; step-children Dan (Meg) Lawrence of Virginia; Jim (Linda) Lawrence of Arizona, and Maridella (Steve) Anderson, of Wisconsin.
