John E. Hawkinson died January 24, 2017 at the age of 91, at his home in Fort Washington, MD. John grew up in Shafer, MN, the son of Edwin and Agnes Hawkinson.
Preceding John in death were; his parents, his wife, Lorna, and his brothers Richard and Ronald. John’s wish was to have a graveside service at Hillside Cemetery in Center City, which was held January 31, 2017.
John graduated from Taylors Falls High School. He attended Union College in Lincoln, NE; Glendale Junior College in Glendale, CA, University of Maryland and received his Master’s Degree in Art Education from the University of Minnesota. He taught art in junior and senior high schools in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. His many interests include a collection of modern and antique art glass. A muralist, philatelist and a history buff, he also found time to do an occasional oil painting.
John wrote several books, including The Brothers and A Date With Destiny. He hosted memorable events such as the signing of his books, dinner on the sternwheeler ‘Princess’, an 80th birthday party for his mother and two garden parties in the backyard of his home in Maryland.
