Virginia Hartley (King) Nelson

Virginia Hartley (King) Nelson, age 84, of Shafer passed away peacefully with family at her side on Wednesday June 14 at St Croix Hospital.

Hartley was born to Elbert and Dorothy King on February 28, 1933 in Illinois.  Her father passed away when she was only 13 months old.  Her mother remarried to James Falkenberg and soon her brother David was born.  Hartley and family moved to Marine on the St Croix when she was 14 years old.

Hartley loved horses all her life which lead to her meeting her husband Willard (Bill) Nelson through The Dalles Saddle Club.  They married in 1956 and raised their family on a small farm in Shafer.  She loved riding with her husband and children; in recent years she loved watching and coaching her grandchildren and great grandchildren to ride.

She is preceded in death by her husband Willard (Bill); father, mother, brother, David Falkenberg; and brother-in-law Vernell (Mary) Nelson, sisters-in-law Delsie (Michael) Hyduke and Raphe (Max) Allen.

Hartley is survived by her children Laurel (Dave) Grenstiener of Shafer, Bruce (Amy) Nelson of Stacy, Steve (Heidi) Nelson of Lindstrom, Brett (Geralyn) Nelson of Shoreview, Dana (Larry) Miron of Center City, and Wade (Ali) Nelson of Stillwater; 20 grandchildren; five great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Bethesda Church (38180 Hemmingway Ave.) in North Branch with Pastor Mark Huber officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church on Wednesday.  Family interment will take place at a later date.

Arrangements are by Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindsrom.  Condolences may be expressed online at www.grandstrandfh.com
