Karl Oskar Days is upon us, lots to see, lots to do, pace yourself

Well, the wait is finally over.  Karl Oskar Days is in full swing.  What does that mean to you and me?  It means that there is absolutely no shortage of things to do this week and weekend.

Beginning Wednesday with the Karl Oskar Days Ambassador coronation. Come out to Harmony in the Park and cheer on these wonderfully talented girls as they try to become the next representatives of Karl Oskar Days.  The coronation begins at 6:30 p.m. at Lions Park.

Thursday (today), there is a wonderful photo show at the Chisago Lakes Library that is presented by the St. Croix Camera Club.  The show runs all day from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.   Thursday night you are invited to take part in the annual Karl Oskar Days cribbage tournament.  Card play begins at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lindstrom.

Friday the celebration kicks into high gear.  At 3 p.m., there is a great walking tour.  You will meander throughout Lindstrom while learning tons of fun facts that made this town so special.  The tour meets here at the Press at 3 p.m. sharp.

Also on Friday, the Lindstrom Liquor Store will hold its annual craft beer sampler. The tasting begins at 5 p.m.

In Memorial Park beginning at 4 p.m., you will find a huge arts and crafts fair.  There will be vendors of all kinds of trades on hand displaying and selling their specialties.  Come enjoy some live music throughout the entire Karl Oskar Days as well.

Down at Beach Park, bring the kids, because there will be an inflatable park.  For a small fee, you can let your kids bounce, jump and run on giant inflatable rides.  Jetpack Midwest will be at the beach flying for everyone to see.  There is a free family movie that begins at 8:30 and this year’s movie will be Disney’s “Paddington”.
The day wraps up with one of the best fireworks shows in the county.  The show will be just off the shores of Beach Park, so be sure to get there early and find a spot.

Karl Oskar Days kicks off Saturday with the super popular golf tournament at Chisago Lakes Golf Estates.  Call the golf course to register.  At 8 a.m., the mega-popular Karl Oskar Days Loppet begins.  You are asked to show up early to register or go to lindstromloppet.zapevent.com.  I would suggest registering online.

At 9 a.m. the classic car show opens its doors at St. Bridget of Sweden’s parking lot.  This year, I am told there will be more cars than ever with a special “Mayor’s Choice” trophy being given to the top car.

If you are a basketball lover, grab a couple of friends and head to Trinity Lutheran Church.  The parking lot is the spot of this year’s 3 on 3 basketball tournament.  The tournament begins at 10 a.m. but you are urged to register at 9 a.m. to secure a spot.

Saturday is your chance to take a tour of the Karl Oskar House at Ki Chi Saga Park.  The tours runs 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.  If you have never been in the house, I would encourage you to do so, it is really neat.

Saturday evening is the big parade.  The parade begins at 6 and winds its way through Lindstrom.  always a great parade, this year’s Grand Marshals are Cindy and Roger Kaske.  Bring your lawn chairs or blankets out early to reserve your spots.

Saturday night wraps up with the street dance. Good For Gary is the headliner this year. The dance is held between the Lindstrom Liquor store and the Muni bar.
Sunday, you are invited to a pancake breakfast held at the Masons Hall across form St. Bridgets.  The breakfast runs from 7 a.m. until noon.

Beach Park will be the sight of this year’s Kiddie Parade. The parade begins at noon and participation is encouraged.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m., one of the most popular events takes place. The human foosball tournament.  If you have not seeen this, I highly urge you to come to the beach. It is so fun to watch and play.  Teams can register by calling 651-213-2600.

So is that enough for you? I thought so. Hope to see you there!
So recently I wrote about our family looking for a cabin to spend a week this summer. First off, I wanted to thank those of you who suggested your own cabins for rent.  We are actually taking a reader up on a long weekend in August.

The more we discussed it, the more we wanterd to venture out to a new area.  We have ran the gammut as far as Brainerd/Nisswa vacations go.  Not that it isn’t beautiful up there, we just have stayed there so many times that nothing is new to us.

We looked into the North Shore. Our family loves that area, but it would be kind of hard driving a small fishing boat in Lake Superior.  Especially with four family members in the boat.

We are not Walleye fishermen so that rules out Lake Mille Lacs.  The kids are too young to gamble anyway.

So we set our sights on the Grand Rapids area. We have only driven through Grand Rapids and I think I played a baseball game there in high school. Friends and family that have been there tell us it is beautiful so we said let’s try it.

After searching for a week, we finally found a cabin that we loved.  We found it on (gulp) Craigslist. Yes you read that right, Craigslist.  What could possibly go wrong with renting a cabin off the internet?

Time will tell, but so far we have had to call the authorities to make sure the person is even real.  I am hoping and praying that when we get there it will be like the photos on the website.  Heck, at this point I am just hoping the cabin really exists.  Vacation and the Silvers, never a dull moment.
