Relay for Life is Saturday, Aug. 3

During the American Cancer Chisago County Relay for Life, Saturday, August 3, Doug Brown, former North Branch Chief of Police will be memorialized by his family and Vickie Duchaine and her mother, Betty Fogel, will be the Honorary Survivors of the event. The relay is 4pm to 10pm at the mall in North Branch.

There are many activities for all including games, food, (walking tacos, baked goods, root beer floats), music and a large silent auction (4-8pm). Registration begins at 4 p.m. and there is a Survivor & Caregiver Reception at 5pm, where people can get a survivor t-shirt. Opening Ceremony is at 5pm

The survivors and caretakers walking lap will be at 6:30 led by Paul Dennison and his bagpipes.  Luminaria bags decorated in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of those who have died will be lit at 8:30 pm.

Doug Brown, age 83, died in April after a six-month battle with colon cancer found during a colonoscopy – unfortunately he had put off getting the routine test and his cancer was already in a stage IV status.  His family wishes to encourage everyone to get colonoscopies as recommended by the American Cancer Society, starting at age 45 or upon advice by their family physician.

Brown was extremely well known around the area, having begun his police work in St. Croix Falls, WI, and was the North Branch Chief of Police from 1983-1996. He also served as Undersheriff of Chisago County for a period of years.  He loved working with youth, especially in the DARE program. Brown also served as a North Branch firefighter for over 28 years. Being a firefighter is a high-risk factor for cancer. His family wants to also encourage any of our marvelous fire fighters to get their yearly physicals to catch any cancer early.

An Honorary Survivor this year is Betty Fogel, who is 83 years old, and an energetic sharp enthusiastic melanoma skin cancer survivor.  She is a former Whirlpool mechanic, wife of deceased William (Bill) Fogel, from Chisago City. She still can beat anyone on her three bowling teams.  She has given endless hours of personal time to many causes in the county including being on the “Tom’s Relay for Life” team – a real volunteer to the maximum degree.

Honorary Survivor number two is Betty’s daughter, Vickie Duchaine, wife of the late James Duchaine. Vickie has survived three kinds of cancer – breast in year 2000, cervical in 2001 and currently under treatment for melanoma skin cancer – an amazing record for any individual.  She has always been full of life and is making lots of exciting plans for the future.

She was a volunteer at St. Gregory Catholic Church, Stacy Lions, Cub Scout #141 in North Branch, North Branch Girl Scout Troop leader and for many years worked also on the Tom’s Team in the Chisago County Relay for Life.  She is truly a walking example of cancer survivorship and an example of what money given to this Relay means on an individual basis.

The Relay for Life committee hopes many residents of Chisago County and near by communities attend this lovely summer event.  Cancer survivors should participate so Relay can support their journey.

A great resource for cancer information is the ACS hotline: 1-800-277-2345. To learn more about Relay for Life, make a donation, go to www.relayforlife.org/chisagoMN or contact Mary Sprecher, 651-494-2445, maryspre@midco.net.  Look also at  Facebook.com/RelayforLife of ChisagoMN.
