Midco buildout announced for So. Chisago Lake
Midco has announced that by December this year an area in south Chisago Lake Township should be connected to fiberoptic broadband service.
Midco estimates 1,000 customers will be reached using the support of an FCC grant that Midco won through the federal communication commission’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund. The FCC awarded Midco $1.1 million in an auction where companies submitted bids showing lowest costs to provide fiber-to-premises service in underserved territories. The FCC program will distribute $20.4 billion overall for broadband service expansion and reliability improvements.
Midco Public Relations Manager Melissa Wolf said current FTTP planned services offer some of the fastest speeds, at five gbps symmetrical, for both uploads and downlaods. This partnership with the FCC will compliment and accelerate ongoing improvements and network expansion in Chisago County, according to a Midco news release.
“Construction in Lindstrom-Chisago Lakes will begin this year and some locations covered by the RDOF award will begin receiving broadband by the end of the year,” the company release announced.
Minnesota State Senator Mark Koran says high speed broadband is a “...utility that communities must look to expand and make available for residents. In greater Minnesota far too many folks still do not have access to high speed internet but with programs like the RDOF ending this disparity is within reach.” Sen. Koran said people encouraged to stay at home during the pandemic have learned how vital it is to be able to rely on internet connectivity for work, school, medicine, socializing and entertainment.
On another technology front, Sen. Koran has been promoting as chair of the Senate Technology and Reform Policy Committee the need for modernizing Minnesota I.T. services. Known as MN-IT, Sen. Koran said he was happy to author a bill SF 353 to improve MN-IT infrastructure in the state. It holds “many benefits to broad swaths of Senate District 32,” he stressed.
