Driver in fatal I-35 crash imprisoned
A Marine on St. Croix man has been sent to prison for 67 months for felony criminal operation of a vehicle with negligence, under the influence of alcohol, that resulted in the death of the driver of a second vehicle on I-35 in November 2019.
Samuel Dakota Moreno, age 25, pleaded guilty. He was sentenced by Judge Dowdal, as family members of the victim, Joffre Kolosky of Moose Lake, looked on.
According to the law enforcement reports, Kolosky was driving a Buick Park Avenue northbound on the freeway near North Branch, when his car was sent off the highway after being struck from behind. The car was reported to 9-1-1 on its roof by a passer-by about 5 a.m. Responding law enforcement followed a trail of leaking fluid from near the crashed car leading them to the rest stop at Goose Creek.
A pickup truck was discovered in the lot with body damage that could be attributed to striking another vehicle in the rear. The front license plate that was found lying on the ground at the crash scene also matched the plate remaining on the back of Moreno’s truck. Moreno was apprehended inside the rest stop building.
He will serve at least two-thirds of the five and a half year sentence, and he must pay restitution to be determined.
