Hiland sentenced to eight years in family stabbing
District Judge Catherine Trevino sentenced Tyler Hiland, age 26, to 96 months in St. Cloud State Correctional Facility July 16 for his plea of guilty to felony assault in the December 2020 stabbing of his mother and father.
Hiland gets 208 days off the first degree assault sentence for having seved that already.
On the second degree assault with a dangerous weapon charge, which carries 33 months in prison, this was ordered served concurrently, which means he serves both overlapping.
According to the information in the law enforcement complaint Tyler was cooperative when North Branch officers, Lakes Region EMS, and sheriff’s deputies were sent to the home on Lowden Avenue. Hiland did not flee and acknowledged he assaulted his parents and was taken into custody at the scene.
Additional charges of attempted murder in varying degrees were dismissed in the plea bargain.
