Second part of 'The New Land' Sunday, sign up for COL events

This Sunday the second showing of “The New Land” will take place at the Performing Arts Center a the high school.  The New Land is a 1971 movie, where in 1850, Karl Oskar Nilsson, his wife Kristina, and their three children, along with Karl’s brother Robert and Robert's friend Arvid, have just arrived in what is now known as the Chisago Lakes area after enduring an arduous trip from Sweden.

With the family initially sheltering in a shanty, Karl  puts all of his energy and resources into building a more permanent house. He begins clearing the land of the pine trees, and, with the help of Robert, Arvid, and some of their Swedish neighbors, completes a small farmhouse before winter comes.

Half of the movie was shown earlier in December and the continuation will be at 2 pm.  The show is free but donations will be accepted.  See you there!

Covid is really exploding according to the state’s website.  The death toll in Chisago Lakes is now up to 101.  Confirmed positive cases are now 11,546 total.  Chisago County’s vaccination rate is currently 59 percent with one shot and 56.5 percent of all age groups completely vaccinated.  The state has now opened a testing site in North Branch at the Mall in the former Nike Outlet building.  Testing is weekdays from 11am to 6pm and they are open Martin Luther King Day we are told.

Last week I wrote about the Celebration of the Lakes coming up in February.  There are a few events that do require a sign-up to participate in.

If you call the Chisago Lakes Chamber of Commerce at 651-257-1177 they will take your registration for the online puzzle contest which will take place Friday, Feb. 11th at 6pm. You can also sign up for the super-popular dodgeball tournament which will be held Sunday, Feb. 13th from 11am to 1pm.

The Chamber is also where you can currently purchase your raffle ticket for a brand-new Polaris Indy 600 snowmobile.  Tickets are just $10 and selling like hotcakes.

Let’s hope the weather is nice, because it would be great to take in fireworks at Paradise Park the Celebration Saturday evening.  If not, there is a great polka dance at Lindstrom Community Center and another later that night at Frankie’s in Chisago City.  More to come.

Thanks for the tips on fixing my ice rink that I have been struggling with.  I have taken the first couple of steps to rectify the ice. If I can just get it to stop snowing for a while that would be swell.

Well I never thought I would see the day when the Vikings would move on from a coach.  For years if not decades, it was always the safest place to coach because Minnesota Nice had more patience than any other team in the NFL.

Kyle Johnson, a local historian who somehow comes up with amazing old photos of Chisago County has struck again.  On the Facebook page ‘Sharing Minnesota History and Experiences,’ Kyle has posted some wonderful photos of Ingrid Bergman and her visit to downtown Lindstrom in 1943. She was in town filming an informational cinema fill called “Swedes in America”. Great photos Kyle and thank you for sharing.
