SBA honors local entrepreneurs

National Small Business Week arrived last week in North Branch, bringing a special recognition for the owners of the Sunrise Flour Mill in the North Branch industrial park, who got into grains and the milling busness as a hobby at first.

Darrold, who formerly worked in biotech and was a Navy veteran,  and Martha Glanville, who was a special education instructor,  had recently retired when they started experimenting with heritage flour and baking.

Darrold started off with a hand mill to grind his own flour. When health issues grew noticeable, he developed gluten-free flour and that grew into mixes.  He says within days of consuming his custom flour he noticed a difference and  Marty, also noticed improvements with the switch in flour product.

In 2017 the Glanvilles went to the Small Business Administration local consulting office, meeting with advisor and Chisago County HRA/ EDA Director Nancy Hoffman on acquiring a 504 loan.

Using this and a grant from the state Department of Agriculture, Darrold and Marty established Sunrise Flour Mill.  They bought a mill and equipment and expanded into the second chapter of this new found entrepreneurial life.  They moved into a site in North Branch Industrial Park a few years ago.

On-line sales “skyrocketed” during the pandemic.  People were rediscovering home baking while staying at-home and being safe.
Darrold and Marty also donate product to community organizations requesting fundraising help. Before covid they enjoyed making pizzas and providing product for causes and they look forward to being able to get involved in this again.

The website has a complete listing of everything from pancake mixes, pasta-making products, pizza dough, and recipe tips. The couple also built customer base selling at farmers’ markets, etc.

The Glanvilles employ 15 and has a presence in stores in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.  The growth rate has been a phenomonal 1200 percent over the past two years.

Sunrise Flour Mill was nominated for the Small Business Administration’s “Encore Entrepreneurs” of the Year award,   by the Chisago county HRA/EDA.
SBA Minnesota District Director Brian McDonald remarked last week the Glanvilles have demonstrated both courage and ingenuity. “We are thrilled to honor their successes as clients of SBA programs and services.”
