STAR ratings for charitable gambling released by state

Annually the Chisago County Press shares data and star ratings for area charitable gambling organizations.  The Star Rating system was created to quickly show the community at what level the organization is supporting lawful expenditures to charity endeavors.

The state legislature gets charitable gambling reports from every organization licensed in Minnesota annually and the data and ratings are on the MN gambling control board website.

Everything from scholarships to helping families experiencing loss, to paying rent for the pulltab space at the local bar,  and support for non-profits make-up lawful expenditures.

If a licensee is contributing 50 percent or more to a lawful expenses — they get Five Stars.

Forty percent as a contribution level results in a Four Star rating and so on.  Those at Two Star or 20 percent and lower contribution are in line for license sanctions if the percent of lawful expenses out of revenue is not improved by the following year.

Our readership area has no Two Star organizations but there are a couple of Three Star ratings to monitor.

The North Branch American Legion is very close to achieving Four Stars being at a 39 percent total lawful purpose expenditures number but it is given Three Stars.  The Legion collected $1.4 million  in charitable gambling proceeds, paid out $1.2 million and had $29,155 in reported charitable contributions in 2021.

Forest Lake Area Athletic Association is also rated Three Star.

Again, it is at the high end with 38 percent lawful xpenditures to charitable causes at $89,000.  The FLAAA collected $11,468,000 in total and paid out $9.7 million in prizes.

Leaders in charitable gaming revenues in this region include the North Branch Hockey Assoc. at $8,244,000 collected. They have a Four Star Rating with 43.8 percent of lawful expenditures going to charity.

Rush Lake Improvement Assoc. collected $8,370,837 in charitable gambling proceeds.  It has an easy Five Star rating at 62.9 percent in charity based contributions. (The state does not give six stars)

Chisago City Fire Relief is not far behind in revenues with $7,652,572 reported for proceeds in 2021. Chisago City has a Four Star rating.
Additional Four Star ratings went to Shafer Franconia Fire, Lions in Forest Lake, American Legion Forest Lake, Stacy Lions, Center City Fire Relief, Lindstrom Fire, North Branch Fire Relief.

Along with Rush Lake Improvement—other local Five Star organizations include: LARA, Rush City SnoBugs and Stacy-Lent Fire.
