Shafer City Council briefs...

Shafer City Council met July 19 for a regular meeting. All members were present with attorney James Monge absent. The meeting began 15 minutes late due to a prior budget workshop.

After consenting the agenda, the council had a brief discussion about the Chisago County Senior Center.  A question was brought up regarding senior transportation and whether it was available to seniors.  Arrowhead Transit is available for seniors(1-800-862-0175) to be brought to and from the center.  The council agreed to donate $2,000 for a contract for services for the senior center unanimously.

The council approved a donation for Shafer Days from Scoops for $25.

The council was told a household along Revere Avenue has requested a deaf child street sign be installed near their home.  Maintenance supervisor Dan Cooper told the council for two signs and four posts the cost would be around $300.  Council member Nick Brehm made a motion to approve the installation of two signs on Rever not to exceed $350 which passed unanimously.

The council then passed a motion to create a savings account dedicated to a future new fire hall.

City clerk Joan Ciesler told the council there are still two homes remaining that have not changed to the new water meters.  Ciesler said one owner has contacted the city and has asked for leniency on their water bills which the water has been shut off in the home for quite a while.  Ciesler told the city she would work with the owner on the outstanding water bills and is hoping to get a new meter in soon.  The other  home has yet to contact the city.

In the engineer’s report, city engineer Lucas Jones shared paint samples with the council for the water tower.  The tower will be painted Pond Blue with white lettering.

Jones told the council T-Mobile has had a lot of turnover and the removal of the antennas from atop the water tower will be close to the re-hab date.  T-Mobile will not be replacing their antennas on the tower because they have a new tower between Shafer and Center City.  Jones told the council he would solicit other cell carriers to gage interest.

Cooper told Jones a ditch by Circle Park will need re-digging due to construction.  “Most likely the culvert will need jetting as well” Cooper said.

In the maintenance report, Cooper told the council the new bubbler in the lift station pond is working great. He passed around before and after pictures of the pond.

The council adjourned at 7:43 p.m.
