9/16/2022 1:44:00 PM State extends Water & Light,
ECE territory revision review
The state has extended the deadline for comments and responses in connection with an application before the MN Public Utilities Commission, altering the service territory of the soon-to-be-former North Branch Water & Light. The deadline to comment to the PUC electronically is now September 20 and the deadline for any responses to those comments is Sept 30.
State utility regulators were asked by East Central Energy and North Branch Water & Light Commission to permit a permanent service territory revision, facilitating ECE’s plan for acquiring the municipal utility assets. East Central Energy as a power cooperative, encircles the city of North Branch. The MN Public Utilities Commission has not played a role in the two-year long dissolution of the North Branch utility until now, when it became necessary to seek the state’s authorization for the necessary territory boundary change.
The PUC extended the deadlines to accomodate the MN Municipal Utilities Association. The association government relations attorney submitted a written request to the MN PUC saying that the application includes “...issues of interest to municipal utilities” and said the association would appreciate an extended comment timeframe.
The Chisago County Press asked the MNMUA attorney for comment on the issues of particular interest, but did not get a response from our message.
