| Chisago City makes second bid for state funds to rebuild North Avenue; Frankie's boat sales expansion approved |
Chisago City will try again to win grant funds from the State of Minnesota to rebuild North Avenue. In 2017, the city made its first attempt to earn a share of Local Road Improvement Project funding for North Avenue, but came up empty-handed. No local road improvement grants were allocated by the state in biennium the following. Now LRIP funding is available once again. The city will seek $1 million for the $1.6 million project to rebuild the road that is deteriorating badly.

There is a proposal that is making its way through the MN House. A bill proposing an end to daylight savings time for the state of Minnesota is gaining steam. Currently the Federal government controls whether a state can change or not. If pressured by state leaders, the government has the ability to change much like Arizona, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, which do not follow current daylight savings time. There have been countless studies that show the benefits of not changing times, including health, safety and in my opinion sanity. The proposal is being considered in the MN House of Representatives. If you think this would be a good idea, I encourage you to contact your local legislators and let them know you support eliminating daylight savings in proposal HF72.

| Driver killed in two vehicle head on |
A semi truck-pickup crash on Highway 95 in Scandia killed an 86-year-old Forest Lake man February 24. State Patrol says Victor Falkner was northbound about 5:50 p.m. on Highway 95 at Pilar Road, when he crossed the centerline in his Colorado truck and hit the southbound 2011 International truck head-on. The 43-year-old truck driver from Roosevelt, MN was not hurt.

The Swedish Immigrant Regional Trail may have got ten the lion’s share of coverage in 2020 as a trailhead opened in Taylors Falls and gorgeous new bridges were set in place on a just-completed segment of the trail— but acres and acres of other county parks and trails also deserve the spotlight.

In a very brief meeting last week, all five Lindstrom City Council members attended in-person and masked. Council learned 10 companies visited the site for the Allemansratt Park foot bridge and boardwalk projects for a pre-bid meeting with the city engineer. Jon Herdegen said bid opening is March 3, and he hopes to have several bids to bring to council for their March meeting to select from.

| Shafer City Council okays township road share, discuss park improvements |
Shafer City Council met February 16 for a regular meeting. The entire meeting was done virtually. In new business, the council discussed the Shafer Township road maintenance contract. The council was told that Shafer Township has a new grader and labor costs have gone up. The existing hourly rate billed to the city is $125 and hour and the new rate would be $150 per hour. Shafter Township spends an average of 10 to 12 hours a year on shared roads. The council approved the increase unanimously.

The group of cities involved in the Chisago Lakes Joint Sewage Treatment Commission last week saw the full extent of services Veolia could provide, starting a review of expanding the contract with the private firm. Veolia, a worldwide environmental services provider, recently tookover the public wastewater system that serves Wyoming, Stacy, Chisago City, Lindstrom, Center City and county sites with a special sewer district (Hazelden/Government Center.)

If you are like me and wonder if you will ever get your vaccine, the state finally has a website that will contact you when a vaccine is offered to your “group”. If you go to MN Vaccine Connector at www.mn.gov/covid19/ vaccine/connector. From there you will be easily directed to a questionnaire that will ask you simple questions including contact information so when the time comes, the state will notify you your vaccine dose is ready. I get that not everyone is on board with the vaccine, and I am not going to judge, but speaking solely for myself, I am getting one. Hopefully sooner than later.

Grandma was right. Chicken soup really is good for you. It helps a lot of colds to disappear magically and I believe it. Soups and hearty stews are healthful and inexpensive and will satisfy a hungry family. In many home, the Dutch oven or a large saucepan on the stove with simmering soup or stew calls for a “m-m-m-m-m something smells really good!” and it really does.

| Water and Light Commission vacancy could be addressed soon |
A resignation from the North Branch Water and Light utility commission has city council venturing back into the process of appointing a member, again. The utility commission went to five members from the traditional three-member format not long ago, and council solicited new applicants for filling those seats. The one remaining original commission term expired this January —and council filled that when the incumbent chose not to reapply. The latest vacancy is created by Vice Chair Emil Dahlberg departing.

| Nuisance ordinance fine-tuned; Muddy Cow to open this spring |
North Branch has adopted a nuisance ordinance that staff assured city council will now provide the city the proper tools to address parcels generating complaints. The ordinance “eliminates ambiguity” according to City Administrator Renae Fry, who reminded council members last week that the city’s been working on this updated ordinance for quite some time.

| Celebration of the Lakes was great, dodgeball and snow sculpting up next |
Wow, thank goodness this cold spell is hopefully over for the rest of the winter. That was an incredibly long spell that we just endured. I had the pleasure of dealing with frozen pipes both at the Press and at our house we recently purchased. Apparently the trick to not spend a whole weekend trying to thaw pipes is to let the faucet just trickle out over night when the temps get the coldest. Thanks to Kevin at EZ Testing for getting us back on track.
