Local lemonade stand a hit!
Emma Niemela got a big suprise at her lemonade stand Tuesday.  Up pulled an Almelund fire truck and of course the neighborhood kids flocked to the truck and the stand.  Pictured above are Emma, Abby (baby), Joe and Ellie Lindberg, Addy Carroll, Mckenzie, Lexi, Dominick and Brynnlie Goldbloom. Lucas Dardine took a break from driving and poses in the cab.  Thanks to firefighter Steve Dardine for the nice suprise!

Taylors Falls Council informed of Wannigan Days re-birth; new activities, interstate parade return
Taylors Falls city council members say they are looking forward to a happy valley once again.  TF and St Croix Falls on the opposite side of the hydroelectric dam are joining forces,  after going their separate ways on Wannigan Days-- a traditionally shared summertime celebration.  No worries;  city leaders are on friendly terms again, the interstate bridge and Highway 8 are no longer parade killing public safety hurdles that the former St Croix Falls mayor declared them to be.  New activities are planned for a 2018 “reboot” of Wannigan Days.

Blueberry season is upon us
With the hot weather we’ve been having lately my thoughts go to cool salads, refreshing beverages and all the fresh fruits, veggies and beautiful fragrant flowers at our finger tips.  Farmer’s markets are filled with all of these. I was visiting a friend last week and she had a gorgeous arrangement of dark maroon lilies, mixed with some babies breath and snap dragons.  I asked her who had given them to her and she quickly said she’d gotten them at the Farmer’s Market in Chisago for herself. She also had gotten garlic scapes (the green stalks), small red potatoes (yum!), scallions, kale, kohlrabi and zucchini. Good job, Lin!

Victim's family admonishes driver in fatal crash to pay attention behind the wheel
A woman who, acording to statements made in the court, has  eight speeding ticket convictions, two texting while driving tickets, a license that’s been suspended twice, was cited for expired tabs two times,  and has a failure to stop at a stop sign infraction on her driving record,  would hardly be considered “lucky.”

A must share rhubarb recipe
No surprises today….well, we’ll see. At least it’s not a lie!  A few weeks ago I was giving you strawberry and rhubarb recipes. Then it was muffins. Well guess what…it’s a muffin recipe with RHUBARB in the batter! I just have to give you the recipe as I’ve made about four batches of these delicious muffins. Some go in the freezer to be ready when someone calls to ask if I’m busy….meaning is it o.k. to come over for “kaffe chering (to share a cup of coffee). I absolutely know this isn’t the correct spelling but what can you say about a  Slovak who is married to a Swede but not married to their language!   Out of the freezer come rhubarb muffins to share with a friend! Some have gone to family (“These are really good, Mom”). Some have gone to friends, (“These are really good Alice, where did you get the recipe?) Some have asked for the recipe, and some have gone to friends who no longer bake. Surely I’m not patting myself on the back! It’s the recipe that gets all the credit.

Officials gather to review housing processes, policies
It isn’t very often that elected city officials and zoning staff from the cities in Chisago County get a chance to meet with each other in the same room  and take a look at a common issue.  At a county HRA/EDA workshop last week, at the Lakes Region EMS Community Room, dozens of city officials had the chance to do just that.

Class of 2018 is a special group, if you are free July 29, we could use you
Over the last few weeks, I have been making fun of the graduation season that is in full swing. If you have read my column you would have seen that the only person being made fun of was myself.  As you know, self deprecation is one of my building blocks in life. If you can’t laugh at yourself who can you? Besides, the intended butt of the joke is always someone who is most deserving.
