Hendren takes home near perfect score from state fair
Mosaic artist Cathie Hendren took home a nearly perfect score for her first time ever at the State Fair, competing in Creative Arts.  She got 99 points out of 100 possible and nabbed all the ribbons.  Her terrific cat image is of her sister’s pet, and is made of pieces of glass, with the blue background complete tiles.  Hendren, who is  Music Director for St Gregory’s Catholic Church in North Branch, only got started doing mosaics two-and-a-half years ago.  Anybody interested in mosaics should check-in with the Facebook group at mosaicmentoring.  The artists there were a big help, she says.  Hendren welcomes inquiries about doing custom images, you can see more of her pieces at Evergreen coffeeshop in Wyoming and Wild Mountain Winery, outside of Almelund.   E mail her at vincecathieh@izoom.net.

Get on the bandwagon...eat cabbage
What veggie do we harvest in the late summer and early fall?  It’s about cabbage today. I was reading an article about how cabbage can help prevent many health issues that we deal with in our daily life. I think we (at least many of us) should get on the bandwagon and promote eating cabbage and other cruciferous veggies to help in keeping our health in check.

Wille family grand kids support The Baby Blanket
This is the fifth year the Wille family grandkids have held a bake sale to support The Baby Blanket, at Lindstrom’s St. Bridget’s Church and they are happy to report they raised $550.  The Baby Blanket program offers pregnant women, new parents and young children encouragement, understanding and material help in the form of car seats, cribs, pack-n-play units, diapers, wipes and mattresses.  Cash donations help in purchasing these new items.  Gently used clothing and accessories are also made available through donations by generous community members.  Pictured: Hannah Reiter, Kaitlyn Wille, Sophia Wille, Nick and Abby Reiter;  Thomas, Alexandra, Courtney and William Peterson, Bo and Grant Wille.  Not pictured, baking helpers: Luke, Dan, and Brianna Wille.  They extend a big thank you to everybody who supported the cause.

Local couple's mid-life adventure into alternative ag
Not far from Chisago County’s Fish Lake Park, tucked in the pines off a gravel road, is a futuristic gleaming aluminum and glass farming operation.  A hot house protects four tanks of tilapia fish, which aren’t being marketed at this time, but the fish are a key element of an aquaculture system supporting crops of lettuces and vegetables, you will find at area farmers’ markets and a couple of grocers.

First day of school jitters out of the way!
The new Lakeside Elementary School in Chisago City welcomed its first-ever students Tuesday morning.  The district administrative offices are also at the new school, in the front entry to the right.  The new school holds second, third, fourth and fifth graders.  The Primary School on Old Towne Road used to hold second grade.  It was remodeled to house the district’s earliest learners and their programming.  Work crews were still busy on portions of the new site’s exterior-- and inside trim and some flooring were unfinished, but Tuesday morning everybody was excited and anticipating the new year.  Pictured top, a  Lakes Area Police School Resource Officer greets arriving students.

I hope you had a nice long Labor Day weekend.  It would have been nice to see the sun a little more than we did, but time off is always nice regardless.

Try different varieties of 'greens'
When a salad recipe calls for “greens” you are given a choice of what kind of salad greens you would like to use. I like romaine, spinach red or green leaf lettuce or iceberg lettuce, which has no nutritional value, but it gives a salad some crunch. Along with my favorites, you might want to try these varieties: chicory (curly endvine), escarole (broad leaf endvine), water cress, dandelion greens (in season), kale or Boston lettuce. Im sticking to my favorites.

What is high in fiber, low in salt? Peanut butter!
Nuts to you! If it had nothing else but wake up America to peanuts we might want to thank Oriental cooking for the peanut. Far Eastern cooks used peanuts in many of their recipes, giving the dish a crunch and a little sweet taste. Americans learned to use them crushed and mixed together with butter to make a spread for sandwiches and crackers and an added ingredient in cookies, muffins, breads and sauces. The average peanut butter sandwich is more economical and contains fewer calories and less fat than a tuna salad sandwich, a hamburger on a bun or a bologna sandwich. What would you say is the quickest sandwich to make and is full of nutritional values....protein, high in fiber, low in salt and cholesterol ?
