Kids enjoy Snake Discovery program at CL Library
Emily Roberts brought her Snake Discovery (snakediscovery.com) program to the Chisago Lakes Area Library August 9.  Kids and adults learned all about amphibians and reptiles, including a turtle --when put on its shell--would flip back onto its feet. You could also hold a gecko, and various types of snakes. Even the librarian, top photo, got into the thick of things and helped youngsters to hold a snake.

Music: in the key of community
Last Sunday Trinity Church in Lindstrom was filled with people, and why is that news you ask?  This was no regular congregation of Lutherans. The church was where more than 200 people were entertained by gifted performers,  from one extended family.

MN PUC okays electric territory swap for ECE
Some 40 years ago state officials divided up service areas for electrical systems in Minnesota-- and East Central Electric and North Branch Water & Light have co-existed ever since. When a building development comes in and it makes more sense to switch service areas, the two utilities will sit down and work things out and that’s what’s happening for the new addition to the Lucht’s Crossing housing plat.

Threshing Show is here already, come out to support a great cause
Well if you are like me, this whole hands-free thing is a major change in life. Of course it’s a great law and should have been implemented years ago, but yet I am still having a bit of a time adjusting.  I was never a text and drive person, but I certainly was a read a text person (I know it’s just as bad).

Making the most of zucchini
It's zucchini season, and time to make the most of this veggie that grows so quickly. If you have zucchini plants in your garden you know you have to be watchful of how fast they grow. One of our sons has a garden and grows zucchini, just two plants this year, and I told him he had better have his neighbor check the garden as they were going to be gone three days. Sure enough, he came home to zucchini that were about a foot long and round as a softball. So much for that!

In any given day a farmer  may need to be a mechanic, a welder, chemist or a carpenter, or maybe even invent a piece of equipment...whatever it takes to get the job done. Rural Center City farmer Keith Johnson has somehow found a way to squeeze environmentalist into his litany of skills to get the job done.  In this case the job is to boost pollinator numbers.

Weather had some input last weekend, Relay for Life is Saturday
I usually begin my column describing what beautiful weather we had for another local celebration. Not this time.  As everybody knows by now, Scandia and the surrounding areas were rocked by severe winds (possibly a tornado) on Sunday afternoon.  Trees were downed as well as damage reported to many homes.  It was an odd storm because it came during an absolute deluge of rain, in fact we couldn't even hear the sirens at our house because the rain was so loud.
