A socially distant Memorial Day honoring
North Branch American Legion Post 85, and VFW Post 6424, performed Memorial Day services at six local cemeteries on Memorial Day morning. Due to the present health threat, event times weren’t publicized, and volunteers performed the services without rifle squads, to keep numbers in line with current guidelines. Post 85 commander Rick Hals, and Post 85 Auxiliary president Michelle Still, presided over the ceremonies. The veterans are proud, and honored to continue this tradition despite these difficult times.

Memorial Day was incredible; get your keys - time to send off seniors
Wow what an amazing turnout the area had for Memorial Day.  Nobody was sure what it would look like with the stay-at-home stuff, but people came out in droves. What was even more impressive was how people did consciously make an effort to social distance even with larger crowds. What it comes down to is just how much reverence and respect our area has for those men and women who have served our great country.  Taking time out of a long weekend to honor those men and women seems like it would be hard, but it’s apparent how important they are.  Thank you to all who came out, and thank you to the American Legions and the VFW’s for allowing us to pay our respects formally.

Summer cancellations from COVID-19 concerns now include Karl Oskar Days and the County Fair
The Lindstrom City Council voted May 21 to call off Karl Oskar Days this summer.  The entire summer outdoor concert series Harmony in the Park has also been called off, in a follow-up vote after just the first two musical performances were cancelled last month.  Lindstrom City Council discussed the celebration and decided the events cannot be offered and still follow guidance for virus avoidance.  The council expressed hopes the events coordinator will be able to develop some sort of virtual experience for the KO Days Ambassadors and create something online in the vein of a Karl Oskar tribute or virtual event, to keep the community engaged.

Simple ground beef casseroles
It’s about ground beef today, or hamburger, as most people call it. Many recipes tell us to drain off the fat after browning hamburger, but a lot of fat often stays behind. Even though it’s an unwanted contributor to cholesterol in the bloodstream, that fat, which rises to the top of whatever the final preparation is, it’s not good for us. Some five years ago, a physical chemist and physician published a sort of recipe in a journal of medicine to give home cooks a way of removing both cholesterol and fat from the hamburger.
