Chisago Lakes earns win, draw and loss in busy week

Rogers 3, Chisago Lakes 0
Chisago Lakes had a tough start to the week when they faced off against Rogers.

They are one of the bigger, more talented teams that the Wildcats will face this year, as they were 4-1 heading into the game, with their only loss to Blaine.

The Royals raced out fast and kept the ‘Cats at bay during their 3-0 victory. Chisago Lakes couldn’t get much offense going at all to counter the Royal’s potent attack.

Head Coach Wayne Kugel said, “We could come up with a list of reasonable excuses of why we lost.  But, we actually felt good about our level of play and our focus.  We took the opportunity to analyze the loss and pick up some new techniques, because quite frankly, Rogers came to the table with a few more tricks than we did.”

Chisago Lakes 2, Princeton 0
The ‘Cats rebounded with their second match of the week on Thursday, September 14 by shutting out Princeton 2-0.

CL dominated play in the first half, but they didn’t have much to show for it on the scoreboard, as it stood at 0-0 still.

But, they knew if they kept working that the right bounces would go their way and they’d be ready to capitalize on that. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, and that first bounce came. Defender Jamie Rogers started a breakout after a nice tackle. Allison Glenna and Estefani Hanson used some deft footwork to get the ball to Jessica Bartz, who rifled it past the Tiger goaltender for a 1-0 lead.

The bounces didn’t stop there. Just one minute later, Hanson won a 50-50 ball off of a Tiger defender and passed the ball off to Bartz, who cashed in another tally, making the score 2-0, which would be the margin of defeat at the end of the game.

Chisago Lakes 1, Esko 1
Despite playing three games in four days, the Wildcats kept their potent offense working against Esko.
They started the game on Saturday, September 16 with good energy, controlling possession and putting pressure on the Eskomos. The pressure paid off when Tess Cody moved a nice pass to Hanson, and she scored her first goal of the year.

In the second half, Chisago Lakes continued to to attack and create opportunities, but Macy Sunnarborg, Esko’s goalie, and their defense, fended off over 30 Chisago Lakes’ shots in the game.

Late in the second half, the Wildcats were hit with a questionable foul call just out of the penalty area.

The Esko player executed a perfect free kick, dropping it just over Chisago Lakes goaltender Thea Kluge’s outstreched hands.

Neither team could break the tie in the overtime session, sending Chisago Lakes home feeling down after getting so many chances at multiple goals.
