Wildcats win first M8C game in four years, beating Monticello

It’s been some tough times recently for the Chisago Lakes volleyball team, but they reversed a lot of years of bad fortune with a nice 3-1 win over Monticello to close their regular season with their first conference win in four years.

The ‘Cats won 25-22, 11-25, 25-17 and 25-22.

“This was a tough, high energy match with awesome defensive plays on both sides,” Head Coach Brigitte Rogers said. The defense was highlighted by libero Audrey Roy, who had 29 digs. Kara Gruntner had 20, and Marie Finch, who does everything for the ‘Cats, had six kills, 10 assists and 12 digs.

“This was such a great match to end the regular season with,” Rogers said. “And it also happened to be our senior night!”

Byron Tournament
Prior to their win over Monticello, the Wildcats won one of five matches against some smaller schools. They lost a three set thrilled to Triton before losing in a two set sweep to Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Lyle-Pacelli. They played some tough sets against Pine Island, but lost in three sets again. In their last match of the day, the Wildcats beat South St. Paul.
Finch and Kennedy Phillips led the Wildcats in kills in that win, with both of them putting down seven attacks.

St. Michael-Albertville 3, Chisago Lakes 0
The ‘Cats put up a good fight in their first set against conference leader St. Michael-Albertville, but after they fell, things went downhill quickly. The first set was 25-23 in favor of STMA. “We just couldn’t maintain that pace of play, though,” Rogers said. “The Knights picked it up significantly in the next two sets.”
They lost the next two sets 25-11 and 25-8.

Section Preview
The Wildcats drew the 11th seed in the 11 team Section 7AAA. They faced sixth-seeded Andover in the first round on Wednesday, October 25, after the Press went to print. If they were able to upset the Huskies, they would move on to face the third-seeded Forest Lake Rangers on Thursday, October 27. If they lose to Andover, their season would be over.
