Wildcats break losing streak

Pine City 2, Chisago Lakes 1
Pine City’s Dusty Bergstrom scored a power play goal at 1:39 of overtime to give the Dragons a 2-1 win over the Wildcat boys’ hockey team in a game played at Chisago Lakes Arena Last Thursday, December 14.

The Dragons dominated the first period, outshooting the Wildcats 16-4.  Jonah Bergstrom scored four minutes into the game to give Pine City a 1-0 lead.  The game remained 1-0 until the 10:48 mark of the third period.  In the Pine City zone, Wildcat Tucker Bakken pulled the puck out of a scrum along the left half wall and passed it to Jace Meierhoff at the left point.  Meierhoff skated a couple of steps toward the center of the blue line and ripped a slapshot into the upper left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1 and send it into overtime.

A Wildcat penalty at 39 seconds of the overtime put the Dragons on the power play.  They held the puck in the zone for a minute and took about five shots before Dusty Bergstrom put a wrister from just outside the top of the left circle past goalie Jesse Carlson and into the left side of the net for the winning goal.

The Dragons outshot the Wildcats 32-22 for the game.  Carlson stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced.  Wildcat head coach Paul Gibson said “This game was a prime example of not being ready to play at the puck drop. When we come out slowly, we allow our opponent to set the tempo of the game. We were able to battle back in this game, but couldn't finish near the end with multiple point blank scoring chances.”

Chisago Lakes 3, Somerset 1
Chase Hemme scored twice to lead the Wildcats to a 3-1 win over the Somerset Spartans.  For the second time this season, the Wildcats dominated play against the Spartans, outshooting them 55-19.  But unlike their 4-1 loss earlier this season, the Wildcats were able to bury enough pucks to win the game.  The game was played at Chisago Lakes Arena on Saturday, December 16.

Late in the first period, the Wildcats held the puck in the Spartan zone for nearly a minute.  At the 13:45 mark, Adam Hanson passed the puck from behind the Spartan net to Sam Helland in the bottom of the right circle.  Helland skated to the high slot and partially whiffed on a shot he wristed toward the net.  David Kimlinger picked up the puck and quickly shot it past the goalie and into the back of the net before getting knocked to the ice by a hard check to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Midway through the second period, Devin Wahlberg passed from the right half wall to Thomas Overgaard at the right point.  Overgaard quickly passed it back to Wahlberg.  Walberg sent a shot toward the net and Hemme tipped it past the goalie and in to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.  Somerset scored with less than two minutes to go in the period to cut the Wildcat lead to 2-1.  But the Wildcats got some breathing room three minutes into the third period.  Luke Zaruba took a slapshot from the left point.  The goalie made the initial save, but Hemme was right on the doorstep and shoved in the rebound to stretch the Wildcat lead to 3-1.

Wildcat goalie Will Burgen stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced to pick up the win.  Wildcat head coach Paul Gibson said “I think we learned from the Pine City game that we need to be ready when we hit the ice. Badly outshooting Somerset in both games, we needed to find a way to finish around the net. Although, several players had numerous opportunities to score, it was particularly nice to see Chase Hemme rewarded for his hard work.”

Hockey Hullaballoo
The Wildcats (3-5-2) host the Princeton Tigers tonight at 7 p.m. at Chisago Lakes Arena.  They will head back to the ice the day after Christmas to play Marshall in the opening game of the Schwan’s Cup Open at 5:30 p.m. on Rink 3 at the Schwan Super Rink.
